looking to buy a newer truck. and for what i plan on using it for ( mainly hauling supplies for house work) im not sure if i should stick with a V8 or save some money and buy a V6. any opinions?

If you are hauling enough stuff regularly that will make the 6 strain then I'd go for the v8. I made the mistake once with a mini van saving a little up front going with a 4 cyl. The problem was that it was a little too heavy for a 4 cyl and it was always starved for power and all the accessories were weaker. Air conditioning could barely keep up, transmission was always between gears (wore out 3 transmissions in 90,000 miles) etc

i think the heaviest thing i would be hauling would be a washer and dryer.. to be fair though im looking at a 14 silverado and the new 4.3 has a good bit of power and torque

fuel mileage isnt a big concern. though i would like better than my 15 MPG combined that i have with my commander, im mainly looking at cost VS need..

If your not towing a trail rig or other vehicle, I'd say V-6. Seems ridiculous, that Today's 6 s , have more power & torque than my 98 5.7 V-8.

That's ultimately the way I look at it. If you're not hauling...go for it. You'll still be miles ahead of most V8's that are even 5 years old.

With 30k on the clock on my 2014 Chevy with 5.3 I just squeaked out a 20.5mpg tank this week, all highway. And with 3.42s it tows like a beast (for a light duty gasser!). Other guys I work with have the same powertrain with 3.08s and are getting 22mpg on the 5.3.

The new 4.3 V6 from Chevy is a clean-slate design starting last year and is world's better than the previous engine. It should be up to the task of light-duty truck work. If you are really going for mileage just pay careful attention to which axle gears it is paired with.

If it's a Ford Ecoboost V6, you get V8 torque and great mileage. The new 2.7 is a monster. 325HP and 375LB/FT and 20+ MPG (Jalopnik got 23, ford says up to 26)

I just find it hard to believe it took them this long to start puttin turbos in all these cars and trucks and that they're branding it as some new ingenious invention that they came up with. The HP #'s are impressive though.

but back to the ? asked.... If you're never gong to tow more than a utility trailer, Id say go with the v6, but it's always nice to have the capability of towing/hauling more if needed...

I don't think they are claiming to have invented DI Turbo, but they are making great use of it. Diesel tech making it's way to gasoline vehs.

Now a DI V6 turbo diesel like in Ram's half ton makes me giddy. A 2.5-3.0 V6 diesel with 400 lb/ft in a Chevy Colorado sized truck (you know, like they have all over the world except here) would sell like gangbusters. Supposedly, Ram can't make their's fast enough.

I've been looking at the Rams with the ecodiesel. I was really impressed with the throttle response. It was immediate, no lag like I was expecting and much quieter than I was expecting too. They're pricey but with city MPG's as high as most others hwy MPG's it's definitely tempting.....

Whatever will maintain the best resale value and has the better transmission.

If I were getting a base model standard cab long bed 2wd work truck: v6 26k

If I were getting a LT+ extended/crew/4x4: v8. 36k

If I were getting an LTZ crew/4x4: 6.2L V8- 47K

Run as fast as you can from the EcoBoost.
One of my customers has 24 in his fleet.

He has replaced 6 engines with less than 50k on the odometer.
BTW a turbo "cleaning" from Ford books at $2,900 once it is out of warranty.

I'm an old school blue oval guy, and came really close to buying an ecoboost truck a year ago. Really glad I didnt.

I think the engine problems were from intercooler plumbing and condensation. Supposed to be all straightened out now.

Doesn't matter to me really, I will never drop that kind of money on a vehicle.

With repair costs like this it won't be long and people will not be able to afford used cars because the cost of maintenance and repairs will be equal to just buying something new with a warranty.

Such is life for foreign car owners and has been for a long time. I can go buy a 2000 jag xj8 for $4k, but let the trans go out it'll cost $4500 to replace it.

Shit thats cheap.
The AWD MB trans is lke $12k.

Well I don't equate anything with a Jag or MB as cheap. Parts for my Honda are plentiful :flipoff2:

kinda off topic but what is wrong with the old 4.3 chevy

Nothing other than the new one makes 285Hp/305lb-ft (old one was 195/260), has a lighter aluminum block and heads (vs iron) with six bolt main caps, and spanks the old engine in fuel economy as well (18/24mpg vs 15/20 for base 2wd). Out with the old...

Looked at the price of new trucks lately? You're screwed either way.
