Anyone know some fun places to go in a stock vehicle? I have rode up past Wilson's Creek and the Mortimer Campground and it is mostly just dirt roads. I have heard that the Keistler Memorial Highway (spelling?) is fun but I am not sure how to get to it. There should be some good places to go up in there to see views of Linville Gorge.

Old NC 105/Kistler Memorial Highway has some great views and is a nice drive. It also is just a dirt road and despite the signs recommending 4WD I have never needed it and we take our car up there a few times a year. Some pics and a map of when we camped up there earlier this year are at http://www.webwheeling.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9567 The map should help you find your way there.

Those are some nice pics. Is there a campground up there you were staying in?

I camped up there with Joel earlier this year. Basically you just pull off the road and camp. There are several sites to choose from.

There are campsites along the road where you can just pull off and camp. The road up there is in pretty good shape and I have never seen it as described in the article you linked to above. It really is a typical gravel/dirt road with lots of great views.

There is Brown Mountain, which is great for ATVs but the part they will allow a Jeep on is basically a dirt road as well. You just have to pay a small fee to go in.

I am going to have to drive through there sometime just to check out the views, maybe camp. I wonder if I could get my tent trailer up there?

Probably.
Last time I was, we saw a Civic. It was kind of surprising, but it was there and looked intact. Just take the ruts slowly.

Seems like as you go in from the south, you have 2 directions to pick, taking different paths. If you take the lien to the right, (east-most fork) it runs up along teh spine of the mountain, and you havet he view from both sides. Very cool.

Can you still drive up to Mortimer? And isn't that on the old globe road. They blocked that road off years ago.

There is a campground there if you drive up past the Wilson's Creek visitor center and take a left when the road dead ends you will see it.
