Hey! I'm new to the Hickory area and wondering where are the good places to buy metal? I just need some small amounts for fairly small projects, not like buying tube to build a buggy or anything, well at this point lol!!

Benco stopped selling to general public for a while during covid/ steel shortage but I imagine they are back open again. Just walk in downstairs and tell them what you need. Not great for small quantities but a good place to buy steel.

Hickory Steel is another in the area. Dont believe they stock anything very useful for us, but they can likely get it.

If I need tubing, I typically go to Race City Steel on Hwy 16 in Denver.

Awesome thanks everyone! I used to have a metal supermarkets down the street from me when I was in IL they were also good for what I do, I see there is one in Charlotte as well, so I guess that's another option.

Thanks for the other places as well!

I used to like Metal Supermarket in Garner when I lived down that way. The girl at the counter would let me have “drops” that weren’t really drops for cheap.

Up here there isn’t anyplace that sells steel really close by.

The one in Charlotte is pretty good. I worked out a deal with the manager and he would let me dig through their steel and aluminum dumpsters. They sold me the stuff at scrap prices. It was amazing the large drops of material they just threw away that I scored.

Benco doesn't carry DOM or any aluminum. They also prefer full length or full sheet sales. They will cut stuff but get your wallet ready. Lunch time is closed, don't bother asking or begging. You'll wait 59 minutes and 59 secs.....I've done it.
Hickory Steel will sell drops. They keep most everything but are more geared to structural work. They also don't carry aluminum products. Not sure on DOM.
Hickory is a bit more laid back. Benco also has a large burn table. Haven't used that service.
