Planting privacy trees-Help

Since we're already here, can someone say a few more words about why I should consider the Green Giant as opposed to Leylands? I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger for this same kinda project but keep arguing with myself over which species to use.

If it makes a difference, I plan on buying/using 4-5' trees that have an actual root ball and not just a spindly little sapling.

You may also want to consider Cryptomeria Radicans.

I would definitely not plant leyland cypress trees.

It want be that bad with a shovel, me and another guy planted over 200 trees in a day

Where is a good place to purchase trees if I wanted to plant some of these?

Previous owner of my house planted Leland cypress around edge of property. I believe he had a landscape company treat/care for the trees as they are in good shape.

2 years ago I noticed some bag worms on them. So I purchased some pesticide and treated them. Currently there are no active bag worms and they are greener and have grown a lot since treatment. Also no wood disease either. I'm going to treat them again in May.

I got mine from price nursery in High Point. Could have got hem online for the same price with free shipping but would rather support a local business.

Joes Landscaping west of Winston Salem

Spiveys Nursery east of Kernersville

Gossetts Landscape Nursery in north High Point

I'm thinking about this exact same thing after the forest lot behind our house was just bought and completely clear cut, so now we have a house being built directly behind ours. So much for all the pretty trees. I'm thinking of planting a bunch of the Emerald arborvitae, which are just smaller than the Green Giant. I'm just not a big fan of arborvitae though.

I'd agree, dig them all by hand and get a friend or two to help out. Not fun work, but shouldn't take very long.

I'll be putting up some giants for privacy myself in the next week or two. I purchased mine from a local nursery for less than $20 each, I believe they are in 7 gal planters. Id old no closer than 10 ft to keep them from killing themselves after 10 years. I like the stagger idea though so I may go a little closer.

Got my 1st 10 picked up today. Got the auger out for a test hole. It's actually nice gray dirt, don't seem like it will be hard at all to run 2 holes and then make them bigger with a shovel. The land my house was built on used to be a fruit/pecan tree farm so they should do very well. Would start planting tomorrow but I fly out for Ohio for work most of the week.

My other 10 trees should be in Tuesday.

Planting them this time of year your are going to have to keep them watered well during the summer if we do not get regular rain. The best time to plant trees is in October and November.

Also: end of season clearance sales.

LOL, tell me about it! I went to Home Depot last fall the weekend right after Thanksgiving to buy lime and winter fertilizer for my lawn. I ended up leaving with 17 trees in the bed of my Ram, LOL. They were all 75% off! One of them was a $120 Yoshino cherry tree which I got for $30.

The year before that I went to Lowes after Halloween and end up buying around a dozen Maple trees at 50% off.

 We did the same but only brought home 5 or 6, including one of those cherries.

I would make a bet with you if I had time to come prove it. (which I don't) You use your auger and method. I'll use a shovel and I'll plant 10 and be finished long before you! :D

I would agree that it's not the best time to plant them with summer heat coming. But I'm doing this to help sale the house. I don't mind watering them. I have nice bushes/flowers out front I keep watered and beds weeded. I actually enjoy it.

As for the bet, I have already planted half of them. I run one hole with the auger, then tilt it around to chew up the sides and make it bigger, shovel the rest and it's done really don't take long at all. Good soft dirt. Planted 9 in 2 hours with many distractions, including a 10 minute dump, a 20 minute babysitting, then my 4 year old constantly helping (read in the way) and putting dirt back into the hole I just dug!! Lol.

Sandwich was good. She brought it out and said she liked the way my butt looked while I dug, the kids were napping and we came inside for a short break after that....
