I have a 95 jeep wrangler (4.0L) and this is my 2nd ax15 transmission. when i up shift (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, & 4 to 5) everything runs smooth no grinding no noise, but when i down shift from 4 to 3 or 3 to 2 my the transmission grinds. not only that, when im in 5 and accelerating (with gas) nothing happens but when i let off the gas and just cruise a weird clucking/chattering/metal on metal sound appears. also when i engage 5th and go to release the clutch pedal it grinds (it doesnt grind when i go into 5th its when its in 5th and i go to add gas). also when im in neutral, and release the clutch pedal, it chatters. I changed the fluid and inspected the clutch components already so i know thats not the issue. Im not sure if its the transmission or the transfer case. if anyone could help that would be great. Thanks

was your trans rebuilt or did you buy a used trans?
i pulled this transmission and transfer case out of an xj that had about 60,000 miles on it (it was in a collision). The last transmission and transfer case that was in my jeep had the same problem as the one thats in my jeep now and was thinking that maybe both had the same issue because of my 4" lift which causes both the transmission and transfer case to be on a little slant. Do any of you guys think that this little slant can cause an issue with oil circulation?

So i had an idea and decided to put my T/case in neutral and see if 5th would make the same clanking chattering noise. I gave it some gas then let off and sure enough the sound was still their but not as loud. With my jeep idling and still in 5th, i got under my jeep and could hear the sloppy chattering noise but can't figure out for sure weather its the transmission or t/case. I want to say that the noise is coming from the T/case but don't know what could possibly be making that noise inside it. Anybody have any ideas?

if it was a t-case issue it would most likely make the noise no matter the gear.

I thought about that to but i also thought that maybe its because its spinning a lot faster in 5th than all the other gears. i found this on youtube and it sounds similar to the noise that mine makes (in the video he explains it at 1:30) and he explains that it happened when he let off the gas which is similar to my situation but mine only happens in 5th (he just said it happened when he drove so i dont know if it was all gears or not) first he said he thought it was the chain but later found out it was the thing that changed the gear in the transfer case that looks like a Y (i dont know the name of it but he shows it in the video at 6:50). do you think this could be my problem
