Vintage 1984 Mor Flo is putting out warm water, no leaks but I noticed water was hotter than normal weeks ago. Should I even try to flush/change the elements or just replace it?
 
No harm in taking the element out, to see what the inside looks like.

Though being from 84' I'm thinking it's a time bomb.
 
Thanks guys, it was a timebomb literally :eek:, I got scalding hot water out of the tap and blasts of air this morning after posting. I also descovered a busted hose bib that apparently froze w the frigid weather we had recently and I'm thinking a second one may be cracked too, so it's back to HD.
 
I'm betting that if you pull the bottom element, you'll find that it's completely buried in mineral sediment.

Ours was, and it wasn't 1/3rd the age that yours is.

And How! I found some fresh leaking inside the housing and the blasts of hot water and air in the kitchen sink this morning made me think the pressure relief valve was stuck. I found much corrosion on bolts laying under the unit from previous element changes and assumed new elements were a hail Mary and waste of time. The drain would'nt function and when tipped over vile brown and black water and things poured out of the feed for ever. We're on a community well w Aqua Carolina and have had many problems w milky/sedimented water and the toilet tanks are stained black. I was astonished to find the WH was from 84, though so was our 84 heatpump that finally crapped out this summer, an old GE unit. I will be flushing the new WH about yearly and maybe it will last half as long as the old one. o_O

Yeah, we're on city water, and I think the last one was only about 10 yrs old before it crapped out. We replaced it, then about two years later had it relocated during some renovation work. It was already full of garbage. That reminds me... it's been about a year. Probably time to flush it again.
 
^^ I'm afraid I'd be changing the filter about monthly and go broke buying them. I'm fixin to have our water tested to see what all is in it. I believe a combination of bad/oxygenated at the well water, and old iron distribution pipes are giving us way to much Iron.
