My rental house was built in 1978, was wondering if the popcorn has asbesstos(spelling) in it. I know they used to put it in popcorn. thx

It is very possible. The clean air act of 1978 banned the use of asbestos in ceiling treatments but there was a loop hole that allowed suppliers to sell off their current supplies so very possible to get a batch well into the early 80's

It only matters if you want to scrape it or tear it out, etc. So long as it's in place and in good condition, it's not a health issue.

I'm no expert but i think if you wet it well w a spraybottle it scrapes off fairly well and reduces the deadly dust inhalation thing.

We did this in a friend of mines house he was remodeling. I don't know if the ceiling was asbestos or not but once it was wet it scraped off with very little effort.

That is how the asbestos abatement teams do it. They difference is they are licensed and charge you a boat load of money to do it.

The big cost is all of the prep work they do with sealing off the area with plastic, special air filtering equipment, clean suits, disposal and clean up.

I would have it tested. If it is asbestos move or have qualified person do it with clearance test done when work is completed. Probably isn't so get it damp to wet and scrape away.

My folks recently had water damage (floor, cabinet baseboard ) from a leaking dishwasher and although I and my brother wanted to fix it, dad decided to put it on his HO Ins. During the demo asbestos tile was found underneath a linolium floor and all hell broke loose. It took almost 2 months and 2 seperate days long stays at a hotel to fix it causing much hardship for my 70s parents who also were taking care of moms 99yo, invalid mother. The thing that really pissed me off was the asbestos tiles and floor under the linoleum were dry. Only the floor under the cabinets, (w/o asbestos tiles ) was water damaged and it could have been repaired in a few days w/o them having to leave home and have loud dryers and limited access to the kitchen etc. for many weeks. I think the whole thing was a scam to make the restoration co. alot of money, and possibly a kickback for the ins. agent who obtained them. I don't understand why they could not leave the asbestos tiles to remain sealed under the linolium where it was'nt hurting anyone.

The chances of getting harmed from a small amount of asbestos is really small. If you work around asbestos every day for 30 years with no protection, then you have something to worry about.

I would get a paper suit and a good respirator and get it really wet to scrape it off. If it is really wet, the fibers shouldnt get airborne.

Just my opinion.
