The roof in my new to me cherokee chief has a lot of surface rust and i just wanted to use this stuff and then hang the headliner back on it. I'll probably just get a gallon can but my questions are;

- Anyone ever used the spray cans?

- Do you need to prep the surface in anyway? use there self etching primer or anything?

- Do you need to prep still painted surfaces differently and can you really apply it straight to surface rust?

Also any pointers or cheap places to pick up a gallon would be helpful. For what that stuff cost I want to make sure its done right. Or if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative? I believe i saw some stuff on pirate but now I cant find it.

I haven't used POR, but I've had good luck with Chassis Saver. It's a good bit cheaper.

I've done quite a few chassis and body panels.
My experiences with POR-15 on a frame totally sucked. I guess because I didn't use all the prep solutions they recommend. I prepped with kerosene (to remove oil) and a wire brush and flat-head (prep rust) and every bit of the por-15 came off in huge peelings.
Now the Por-15 gas-tank sealer. No problems with that! Coated 10-12 tanks in my life with absolutely no problems and used Kerosene as a prep as I always do.

Never heard of Chassis Saver?

My favorite of all is a product called Rust Converter and is cheapest to boot. I get it by the gallon (available online) and use a brush. And I get spray cans of it from walmart for hard to reach areas. Just have to go over it 2-3-4 times and coat with paint but lasts forever. The rustier the better as well for a rough surface to grab but scaling /pitted rust has to be chipped out regardless of product (not pertaining to your case).

But regardless NEVER use a product called Rust Bullet. Nothing sticks to it. And it don't last. Got a complete chassis that needs redone.

One of my favorite "after" coatings (besides Gloss Black Industrial Enamel from wal-mart / lowes) is alumi-seal "tin roof coating". I coated a truck bed over top of rust converter with it and it has withstood about 14 years just sitting under a pine tree being abused as my #1 scrap metal container.

All I have...

I just finished my crawler, done the DOM Cage an done all the steps they recommend. Have a small fortune tied up in POR-15 I used the Marine Clean as they say to, an used there etching product as they say to. An I did it by the book.
That said, It is pealing off all over the place. It isnt easy to work with etc. I woulndt use that shit again if they give me a truck load of it. I do not like it.

ive used sem rust shield a few times, you can brush it or spray it, i have a 87 monte ss that the paint was all faded off so bad that it was all rust all i did was use a da sander with 80 grit, sanded it washed it off and sprayed it, did it all in half a day, i didnt expect it to last six months, that was about three years ago and theres still no rust coming threw but it did fade, i also brushed it on a truck frame and held up good too.

I use ospho rust treatment on both rusty & clean metal. Can brush, roll, spray, or dip with the stuff. Most hardware stores will have it. Last I bought was from Sherwin Williams. Should be $20 - 22 a gallon.

Thanks for the input. I've been reading round as-well and seems a lot of people are having the same problems described here with POR 15. A lot of people seems to say use less prep for better results. But since that goes against the companies own instructions don't believe I'll be getting any POR 15.

I used the silver POR 15 (dont know if it makes a difference or not) when i replaced my control arm bushings. Thought i might as well clean it up and keep the control arms looking good. all i did was make sure i got all the loose dirt and rust off cleaned it with brake clean and brushed it on. let it sit overnight and rattle canned over them. they hold up great for me! we have also used Black POR on a co workers trailer tongue and a customers 37 truck and neither of them have compalined. i guess its just a matter of personal preference but I will personally never use anything else!

Hope you get good results bud!

I por15 all the chassis's on any cars i build and all i do is clean them real good and roll it on. I will tell you no matter which chassis sealer you use wear long sleeves and gloves because it won't wash off skin.

You got that right, If it stayed on metal like it stays on your skin, that would be the best paint ever.

That's what I keep reading everywhere. Seems everyone who goes the whole marine clean route ends up with pealing paint. Not sure what I'm going to do yet, I have to get the back window roll down first:rolleyes:

POR is not meant to go over clean metal. It doesn't seem to stick at all to clean metal. I've used it with great success on rusty parts/old chassis. It doesn't have any UV protection though and will need a top coat of some nature. I personally wouldn't use it for your application though. I'd just clean it up really good and use a zinc primer and a top coat of paint, as it is on the inside of the vehicle.

This is exactly what rust converter is. But this site lists $40 a gallon - the same as rust converter??? I've never got it for much less than $40. I have a sherwin williams I'll check but doubt it will be $20-22.

I'm thinking I'm going to try this stuff and I'll check my Sherwin Williams as-well. Where is it at Wal-Mart in the spray can? With the regular spray paints?

Please excuse me. I'm old and senile. Also I could have been heavily medicated at the time of that post. I'll be sure and have you fact check my posts in the future.

Old and senile - Join the club! I went back and fact checked all of your old posts and you're all good.:flipoff2: Keep me in the loop though with any future posts for future fact checking...:D

Hope I didn't offend you vot454 but I buy this stuff 4 gallons at a time and took this very serious! I restore old trucks for myself and others as a serious side job / hobie. You had me going with the $20 bit for I went back and looked at my last purchase 2 months ago with a reciept of $151.95 from the Rust Store. I still haven't proven shit till I go to SW next time and they may go up between now and then so my conclusions of your content may not be accurate. But I can report back if you want???:huggy:

The ONLY time POR 15 works is on RUST. Knock off the big scale and paint it. No prep work is the key to this stuff. It will NOT stick to anything but rust (and your skin). If you've just got some rust spots in the paint it's not worth the price.

What was the consensus I'll be tackling some rust removal coverage and am looking for good options. I'm not sure por is a unanimous choice so what's the best plan B.

I used por on a rusty Toyota frame and the corners that my buddy couldn't get too, flaked off within 3 months, the parts that he prepped good haven't flaked off. I have also used osphos rust converter clear light green color. and it is the best by far I have ever seen, turns the rust black in front of you, after it dries, hand sand it and cover it with a paint and you'll never know, I had a rusty old dodge truck and never thought that I would stop the cancer but it did!!!! Not a fan of the price for productivity that POR gives.
