portable tool boxes

That's different, I like the tool bags of different sizes for ease and stowability and they're quiet. I had "Tank" bag that was about 24in x 6x6long. It was handy for long stuff. Military surplus and very well made, full length zipper.

This, I hate tool boxes for portability, tool bags are the way to go.

To the OP, granted you can never have too many tools, thats a whole lot sockets and wrenches for a trail bag. Plus those aren't the only tools you will need. With a bag or box whatever you choose, get some of those nylon zipper bags they have at wally world for $3 to store your SAE or metric wrenches/sockets. Those too are durable and water resistant. They look similar to this.

I use a flat ammo can like this one:

Water tight but sturdy enough to be used as a jack base on soft ground. A bit on the heavy side, though when full...

I went deaf/crazy looking at that. RATTLE!!

Yea I got to thinking about that would be loud as crap. What would y'all suggest to keep sockets on in a tool bag? I am the type of person that I need to see that I have something missing or I will loose it. And if I just threw them all in a bag I would have a hard time keeping up with them

I used the magnet socket thingys, I'm still using them with good luck. I love the dam things. Northern Tool has em.

I carry a 64 piece Husky set that has a 1/4 and 3/8" drive handle and most of the sockets I'd ever need in a blow-molded case. I've been using it for 10 years or so now, and it's done me well. Everything has a place and I know when something isn't there. Hell, I go to it more in the shop than I do my rolling tool chest! Beyond that, a bag or box with all the random hand tools, hammers, breaker bars, pliers, saws, loctite and anti-sieze, lubes, screwdrivers, and everything else you need and you should be set. No, it's not elegant, but it works.
