Well I have a chance to pick up a 78 cj7 .
Here is a list of it's current mods and spec's
1. spring over
2.35 inch tires
3.258 6 cyl
4. auto trans
Here is what it needs
1. A complete wiring harness
2. seats
3. probaly shocks
Now what else woud you guys do to it ?

SOA with the stock narrowtrack axles will be kind of top-heavy. If these axles were used, i would go wider somehow...wheelspacers, ton axles, 82-86 CJ-7 widetrack axles...

If it has the AMC20 in the rear, you should replace the stock 2-piece shafts with aftermarket one piece shafts.

The one bbl carb on a 78 258 isnt terrible, its better than the 2bbl used on later models. A fuel injection upgrade is really nice.

Take a close look for frame rust in the rear. Inside the frame rails by the gas tank always rusts, drivers side seems worse than the passenger side. You see a lot of rear shackle hangers arent really attached to much frame.

The frame above the rear spring hanger (non-shackle end) always collects a bunch of crap; make sure the frame isnt rusted away there.

CJ-7 frames get cracks just behind the front spring hanger (non-shackle end), inspect here.

like renegadeT said check the frame, when I bought mine the rear drivers spring hanger was in the frame because it had punched through the frame.
