A friend, & myself, need Chevy 350s rebuilt. BBB, has only 1 complaint, but Poteat, is not accredited. Searched all the reviews, I could find, seems to be 60/40=love/hate. has anyone here used or know a user, of Poteats? The prices are great, but is it too cheap?

Rodney, Poteats (on Elizabeth Ave) built my 258 (Granny's engine) in 2006. You've been around it enough... hope that helps. :)

FTR: I specified Elizabeth Ave as there is, or used to be, more than one Poteat that built engines. I know the one on Elizabeth Ave.

Thanks Don, didn't realize you used him. Maybe the reviews, were mixed, as well. Poteats, is listed on Elizabeth Ave., & Hideaway St., which is a dead end, off Elizabeth. I was thinking it was the same, & maybe a street name change?
Just checked locations again/2 different-maybe a block apart/ SAME phone #

I got a 4.0 long block from them a few years ago after hydrolocking my yj and slinging a rod through the block... Best price I could find and it ran great...

Thanks jerretxx, & others, for your comments. My friend is going to get his 350, rebuilt at Poteats. What I had in mind, is not feasible, due to being an OBD II computer engine. I will have to go another route, if I do anything.

Usually he rebuilds your own motor, I doubt he has one ready to go out the door. If you wanted or needed another motor, he'd tear yours down, to determine the care value.

Well that would be pointless. My trucks already had one rebuild and its now at 400,000. Has 75% compression on cyclinders 1, 2, and 4. Cyclinder 3 has 25% compression and just blew the head gasket. I was told i could pull my old engine, hall it up there, give him the old engine for core charge and he sell me the remanufactured for $900.

Why would it be pointless? That is why it's called a rebuild.

Thats it right there

Im in automotive repair at tech. Rebuilding a engine twice seems unethical. Especially on 400,000 after the first rebuilt. Time for replacement.

You need to talk with him. I only know the basics, & most of that is based on small block Chevy & Fords. Even on them, my knowledge, is that he tears your motor down, to see what he'll need to spend to rebuild it.
If it's not buildable, he's not going to take it for a core charge.

What's unethical about properly rebuilding an engine? Many older blocks can be bored over several times. I don't know 22re's, but JEEP 4.0s can go 0.030" over, 0.060" over, and even more on hot rods if they have good cooling systems.

If you are at York Tech, well mistake 1 for become a mechanic.
Mistake 2 is making a definitive statement without all the facts.
What was the overbore rebuild 1? Was an overbore even required? Maybe rebuild one was just a ring and bearing and hone and polish?

theres no reason whatsoever that your engine can't be rebuilt. i'd bet that the first rebuild
overbored to 20 over (maybe not at all) that leaves plenty of meat to go 40 or 60 over.
as long as the main journals have not spun a bearing or the thrust bearings have not spun
the block can be rebuilt many times. if its already 60 over they can install sleeves and bore
it to stock. (highly unlikely that its 60 over) good luck with your quest.
