Taking manual steering off 1978 cj5 with 304 v8. Just took power steering assembly from fsj. Everything bolts up to my 1978 cj5. Having problems with steering wheel shaft bolting up to gear box. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Riggo - what year FSJ did you pull the parts from? Not sure what the year break was (74ish I think) but I remember there being a change in the gear boxes for power steering around that time. I beleive it was when the GM styled columns were introduced.

Thanks for the reply fishingeek, I'll be back with more info, got to go to junkyard Monday to checkout what year fsj is. Thanks,Riggo

The power steering gearbox lower shaft is sized different from the manual lower shaft.

I did the same thing on an 80 CJ-5. I just used the two shafts that i had (stock CJ and stock FSJ), and pieced those together into one shaft that would bolt right in. not hard to do, just make sure you get good welds.

I never was a fan of welding the steering shafts unless it was off-road (low speed) only. One thing that I had done with a Camaro column swap was to seperate the lower shafts. My donor and CJ had the two peice slip shaft. I drilled the plastic pin and seperated the two units to make one that would fit. After I got the length needed I drill and made a new pin. Might work - might not for what you need. I got lucky with the donor and CJ using the same sized shafts.
