Correction, according to WSOC this is in Stanley, not Denver.

I don't know who they are, but these people are in a world of hurt. This is terrible news and close to home.

DENVER, N.C. — Two young children trapped when dirt fell on them at a home construction site Sunday were not expected to be found alive and crews expected to work through the night to recover their bodies, a fire official said.
A father of one of the children called 911 at about 6 p.m. to report what happened, said Lincoln County Emergency Services public information officer Dion Burleson. Crews were on the scene in minutes, but couldn’t get to the 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, Burleson said.
Crews used shovels and climbing gear trying to get to the children at the Denver neighborhood. Emergency personnel from several places, including nearby Charlotte, were on the scene late Sunday.
Video from WSOC-TV shows backhoes scooping dirt from a deep hole surrounded by dirt. Equipment surrounded the hole. Burleson said it is hard to estimate how far down the children might be.
The man who called was the father of at least one of the children, Burleson said. Neighbors told WBTV that the children were cousins.
This is “devastating for both the family members and responders who are on the scene,” Burleson said. “This is a tragic night in Denver.”

That is so sad. Praying for the families.

Sent from my zombie assult vechicle using a ham radio

That is tragic, It does not appear to be a professional ( safe ) excavation/construction site from the pics. A hole that deep should be stepped down ( way wider at the top) to avoid collapsing.

Truely is a shame. Hoping for the best for the children. The work site does look a little on the sketchy side. I hope this doesnt turn into a blaming game...the site was sketchy but the kids shouldnt have been there.

I can just see the headlines now. "Government officials ban all hole digging deeper than 2 feet"

The media is fixin' to get out their wide brush again... From the WRAL report:

neighbors' reports that the man was excavating the two-story pit to build some sort of a protective bunker.

I bet tomorrow's version of the story uses the words "arsenal" and "stockpile".

Seems it was at his own place, dug 20-24' deep with a ramp going in, straight walls.

Regardless of why he was digging the hole, he obviously had no idea HOW to dig a hole that deep. Proper digging and shoring would have prevented this tragedy, and unfortunately he has to live the rest of his life knowing his negligence caused the deaths of those two precious children.

STANLEY, N.C. – As investigators learn more about why two children were accidentally buried alive, drugs and guns were seized from the homeowner.

After a 13 hour search and rescue effort turned into a recovery effort, the bodies of 6-year-old Chloe Jade Arwood and 7-year-old James Levi Caldwell were pulled from a 24-foot-deep pit Monday morning.

The area where Chloe and Levi died was an excavated basement at their grandparent’s home, currently under construction, authorities say.

NBC Charlotte has exclusive video of Lincoln County investigators removing several guns and marijuana from the house of the owner.

Monday, neighbors said the homeowner was working on some sort of construction project at the time of the accident.

The cause of this incident is currently under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.

In a press release sent to media outlets, officials said their findings would be passed along to the District Attorney’s office to determine if charges will be filed.

Wow, he's all kinds of screwed. The link says he was a felon, and had guns and pot plants in the house. Though I'm not sure where a search of the house came into play but I'm sure the guy is already feeling beyond shitty. Were the kids in the hole while he was digging?

Underground meth lab.
And i live in Stanley.
Trust me on this one.

Although this is a tragic accident but like Braxton said where did the search of the residents come from? This is something that ticks me off about the PO PO. Why was there any reason to go in the house and search? The accident/situation is outside.

Sorry for the high jack! Thouhts and prayers for the families lose!

Do ya'll really think you can have two dead kids in a hole in your back yard and expect the police to NOT search your residence? The "accident/situation" is every inch of that property indoors or out, and every parcel of property tied to the same owner, be it a car, truck, another piece of land, business, whatever. For all anyone knows he tied a bag over their little heads and suffocated them elsewhere, threw them in the hole and covered them with dirt before calling 911. Lets get to the facts, not just take his word on it. Search everything he owns and everything he's associated with that could pertain to the loss of these two innocent lives.

No, but it is a valid question.
There would have to be some grounds for the search. Now I suppose with missing children until the bodies were discovered or I guess even after they could call it a homicide investigation and look for evidence the children were harmed in the house?

Who knows

Some grounds for the search? How about a giant, most likely illegally dug hole that, to any competent person, was clearly being built for some illicit reason?

Or, you know, the two dead kids in said hole...

Their funerals were today, BTW.

One of the news sites said the weed was in pots outside the house.

By some reports I read the kids went to play in or retrieve a toy from the hole and dad/uncle seems to have let them? If that's true he must be more than a little legally responsible for this tragedy.........and a complete idiot. It's nothing but sad just to read about or imagine it.

Look, I agree its horrible parenting and he probably deserves to swing for it.

But Just because I dig a hole in my back yard and if someone gets injured in said hole that does not give probable cause to illegal search and seizure.
Are you really saying the hole was illegally dug? Shit I didnt know there was any laws governing the diggin of holes.

man this is a tragedy, but I am shocked at the willingnss to allow LEOs free reign.

So as a sensible government, what size hole should we allow one to dig?

I don't give a shit how big a hole someone digs, it's when kids reportedly start dying in said hole that it becomes a problem.

All I'm saying is if the hole was for the purpose it said it was, there should have been permits filed for it.

One look and that would have been shut down. Kids wouldn't be dead...

re: the search, all it takes is for somebody to see something out of place while at his house, and the ball gets rolling.
He's already a felon with a history of selling drugs.

Imagine the scene, a hundred people are at the house for hours.
All it takes is one guy to need to use the bathroom and go into the house to pee. Maybe an officer, EMT, whoever.
While in there they spot one of the "several firearms".
oops, he's not supposed to own any. JonBoy the EMT tells BillyBob his cousin the LEO, hey FYI this guy has some firearms.
Word gets out to the popo, OK now they have a reason to go in and search, nab the gun. Oh look, found pot too...
