Preserving cut timber for later use

I had to knock down one of my favorite trees along my driveway over the weekend. No matter what I tried I couldn't get the road graded wide enough to be safe with it standing.

So I told the wife I would like to cut it into logs and store them and hopefully use them for some pieces in the house, such as a mantel and maybe have someone mill them for a table.

I assume I need to debark the logs and stack them off the ground and allow for air flow. I then planned to cover the stack with tarps.

Never tried to debark a tree and have no experience preserving logs so any help would be greatly appreciated.

And paint the cut ends so they don't dry out too fast and crack. Also, crib it up off the ground, preferably with metal or masonry to keep the insects out.

I'd spray the ever loving piss out of them with bifen just for good measure every few months.

Store up off the ground so it doesn’t rot. Paint the ends ASAP. Keep an eye out for bugs and if you see bugs and/or mold, spray with borax or bleach. Cover with tin to keep rain off but let air flow to slowly dry so it doesn’t split. Leave bark on.
