I have a 93 Jeep Cherokee. The Battery is dead due to a parasidic drain (haven't isolated that drain yet) it has been sitting for about 6ish months in the same spot and hasn't been started for about 2ish months (with a jump). Any hoo, that's just some back-up information, now to the real question...
I would like to do some preventative maintenance on the 180K engine to make this my DD, and because of that, I want to make sure I do this right. How do I approach a mechanic with my thoughts and at what price do I say "hey, that's a lot for some engine work, I think I'll just buy a new one (engine)"

Undo the air filter box and pull the air filter out. If the filter is soaked in motor oil then your engine is wearing out (Blow-By). If there is just a tiny bit or none to be found anywhere then your rings are good and you probly have a pretty good motor.

For your question on price.....If you look on eBay, you can buy a remanufacured motor from $1400-$2000.

If it was me....

I would first check the air filter for oil. Say there was a little oil or none at all, i would drive it. I would drive it to O' Rielys and buy, New Spark plugs/Wires , Rotor cap/Button, Change the Oil/Filter and substitute 1 quart of Lucas Additive, PCV Valve, and flush the radiator. However it is your jeep so do what you wish with it.
 
^ x2 , except there is no PCV on a 4.0 Jeep motor.
Basic tune-up, fix any oil leaks, Full fluid/filter changes for every fluid in the jeep, including flushing the brake system. Then, drive it 'till it dies! (probably a good 50-100k+ more miles)
 
If you have the 4.0 then 180k means the motor is just getting broken in!! :lol::lol:
