I just bought a 1999 jeep cherokee 4.5" ROUGH COUNTRY LIFT with new rear springs. When I put it into 4hi it does not line up with the symble on the console and when I pull it back to 4low it jumps out. What could it be and 4hi works great. jeep has 130,000 miles and well up keep and lift was just put on 3 months ago and he never even used 4x4...Thanks Guys for any help

Yeah, sounds like a linkage adjustment problem. When it is in 4Hi, does the indicator show somewhere between 2Hi and 4Hi?

Yea right in the midle and no lights on the dash. It has the trans drop allready from what i see.
You can adjust the linkage and it should work. I imagine you can search around on NAXJA or one of the XJ forums and find a thread about it with better info.

Set the jeep in 2wd, lossen the 13 or 14mm bolt on the adjustment rod in the linkage, adjust so the case is perfectly in 2wd and tighten down the bolt. If this wasn't done when the t case drop was installed it isn't lining up properly inside the case.

my sisters tj done the same thing. had to adjust linkage as said above, and slightly bend the tab its attached to towrds the case a little. hers works great now.

Before i went to a SYE, I had a t case drop kit and all I needed to do was adjust the linkage like stated before. Should take care of it.

I had the same problem and adjusted my several times with no luck at all.Ended up having to change some gears out where they had rounded off from it sliping out and the shifter fork bushings. That fixed mine.If the adjustments dont fix it get another t case or replace the gears in yours or the shifter forks or the shifter fork bushings inside the case.Good luck

Yea there 17's with mtr's and they were on it when I bought from a GI. Also has indash DVD,CD,Tuner,Nav, and 1,000 watt kenwood in the boot. He spent alot of money...

I have a Cheroke I had to cut the metal bar stop in the floor to get low to engage. The linkage is to wore out it is not a DD so I just let the consol move to get enough slot.

My old xj didn't want to go all the way in 4 low. It would go but sometime pop out. The shifter was hitting the mounting bracket and it had to be trimmed.

look at the linkage under the Jeep. Part of the shifter connects to a plate on the transmission. Where the linkage goes into this plate is a bushing. Sometimes that bushing falls out/wears out/whatever out. If it has you'll be able to shift into 4hi but probably not 4 low and would explain the lever not aligning. If you have a dropped tranny that's probably the case since half the linkage is attached to the uni-body and the other to the tranny. I'd check that first...
