interesting thread back in December at rasoenterprises forum...

Looks like maybe forklift tanks are legal on the road now per NFPA regs?? Anybody wanna do some research?

A forklift tank may not be used INSIDE a vehicle, as your original post stated. NFPA 58-2008 does indicate that motorfuel containers, including DOT and ASME may be used on the road. This is a change from earlier '58's.

so that means they are legal, as long as you do not have them inside the vehicle.

What about the fact that you wouldn't be paying a road tax on the propane. Would you need to register with DMV to pay the road tax, like you would do if you are making biodiesel.

Serious questions, we just finished putting it on the suburban.

When I used to get my tanks filled at the flyin J, I was given the option to pay road use tax.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the NFPA standards (from what I understand) were developed for/by the insurance industry and OSHA. I don't think the NFPA is a standard for law. I myself run pane on my CJ and don't know the law but would like to know for sure. I've talked to a couple of HP and they said they usually wouldn't say anything about the forklift tanks but the motor carriers my have a field day with you.

Even if you don't pay road tax on the fuel when you purchase it, you are still required to pay for it. guys running grease in their diesels fall under the same category. How much you "use" :D is up to you and determines how much you are supposed to pay. I did see a form somewhere that you're supposed to fill out.

someone else here with more experience may be able to shed more light on the subject.
