I want to beat my chest for a moment here.
Well much to my surprise when I got home last night my 8 yr old son,
Quint, had paper work saying he was one of 3 kids choosen for the gifted
child program at school. Appearently he's above his classmates in
general knowledge and understanding. He ACED the 3 days of end of grade
testing last week. Looks like the limited TV, no Gameboy, pro active
parenting etc has paid off in a good way. Surprisingly 2 kids actually
failed the end of grade testing (3rd grade). I'm a proud daddy. So when
ya see him next time give him a high 5.
JB :)

Congratulations, I totally agree with sentance 5! I've got two girls so I'm totally outnumbered at my house.

Obviously he took after his mother. :D

HAHA ! Yea he did. She's graduating this summer with her masters and a 4.0 GPA from NC State, and doing it all online to boot !

Thank goodness! I thought you were gonna say you were gonn have another little JB running around. Heaven knows we don't need another one :D

Just had to :)

And it is pretty bad when a kid in 3rd grade can't pass the EOG's, unless of course the kid has a learning disorder, with all the huge curves the state puts on tests, you can miss over half and still pass (on many tests).

X2 was thinking the same thing as soon as I started reading it !!!!!

J/K JB congrats, show proper parenting does pay off... Sitzes kids are another good example...

Kind of amazing what happens when the parents raise the kids instead of the Gov't huh? Tell him good job from us!

Try approaching it from the teacher's perspective and you'll see why. The teachers are not allowed to teach anymore.. the school year is a year-long prep course for the EOG's. Couple that with the kids that get advanced despite their lack of ability to speak, let alone READ English, and you wind up with failing scores.

I know you're not, but those who blame the teachers for the kids not learning need to be drug into a classroom by a pair of vice-grips on their nuts before they'll understand.

Try this on for size - my Mother's last year 3rd grade in Harnett County:
5 that can't READ English, 3 of which can barely say their name in English.
1 autistic kid whose parents won't have him tested, so he freaks out whenever he feels like it.
1 kid who said "You fail me and I'll kick your ass" (Gee, i wonder where he gets that attitude?)
1 kid who punched her.

At the end of the year, hers was the ONLY class in school that had a 100% pass rate. What did she get for this achievement? Criticism, for not following the school's perscribed "guide" to the letter. She quit. Can't blame her.

P.S. 3rd grade stuff was easier when I was in school.. These kids are being pushed harder...

Congrats John...

Golf clap. 90% of developement begins before a child even sees a school.

Good job JB.

Yea, I'm definatly not critisizing the teacher. I Know we'd have a lot less problems in our schools if The teachers were 1. Paid like they have more influence on tomarrows society than just about anyone else, and 2. Were free to actually TEACH, instead of just do what the gov't says should be learned. Sorry, but that punkinhead will never go to public schools.

I think Mom would just be happy if part of her paycheck didn't have to go for school supplies like pencils and paper... :|

Yea, since when do the kids not bring their own pencils and paper? When I went to grade school, we all had to bring a thing of paper, pencils, and a box of kleenex, along with the standard folders trapper keepers etc.

congrats JB... the limiting of privelages really does help. i was fortunate enough to be in the "AG" (academically gifted) program through my public school years, and looking back on it alot of my success was due to the limitations my parents my parents set on me. i had no choice but to excel at school first, then i could have the luxery of other things. lucky for me, i was a freak for anything with a motor at an extremely young age so i busted my butt on schoolwork so i could play with my go kart in the afternoons, etc. hell, my parents even bribed me into doing acadmecis by letting me cut the grass with the riding lawnmower :flipoff2:

certainly a growing problem with the recent influx of immigrants, but basic english speaking/reading/writing skills have been a problem for decades and decades with the public school system. not only with other nationalities, but also with people who were born and raised in the U.S., with parents who were also. for example, my dad didn't learn to read until he was in his mid 20's. the public school system has alot of cracks for kids to fall through.

sorry for the novel, i tend to be pretty close to these sorts of subjects being an education major :flipoff2:

EDIT: imo, 99% of the problem with public schools is related to the government having its head up its ass. there are entirely too many regulations, pc crap, etc... educators hands are tied. not to mention the piss poor budget, and the absolutely horrible managing of what funds are available.

Dude, They bribed you to LET you mow the grass? Yea, so ya got to drive, but that wasn't a bribe, it was a trick! My parents MADE us (me & my brother) do it. We had a rider too, but it was a chore. I hated it. I'd trick my kid into doin' it too. Just got to grow a bit first.

DAMN smart parents ! That's the way to do it ! I'm already using some of the 'tricks' with Quint. I guess it's not really a trick, just being a smart parent in raising children to be responsible, productive and happy adults.
Today at school is "board game day", so he took his chess set. Little guy actually beat me twice so far on his own (Daddy didn't ljust let him win)
It will be interesting to see if any other kids know how to play chess or are just lost without their Gameboy.
Thanks for everyone's comments and feedback. I don't know where 'my' wisdom comes from in raising a child (no instuction manual when he popped out of mom), but what we're doing seems to be working. Maybe it's just taking an actual interest in the child and spending quility time with him/her.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Don't let the TV raise you child, do you?

Sitze kids

Yager, thats not another example, thats a miracle, look what they had to work with. :D :D

JB, be careful though.
I was in the gifted and talented program in elementary and middle school. They sent the note home with me the first time too.
Next day, teacher asked where my homework was, I told her I didn't have to do it, I was gifted and talented!
