PSA: Check your recovery points

Just a friendly reminder to check your tow/recovery points. While recovering the RamCharger yesterday with a kinetic rope, the welded on tow loop of the recovery vehicle broke, launching the broken metal loop back into my windshield. The rope was being used in a kinetic fashion, with the tow vehicle using forward momentum while trying to bump the heavy ass pig of an RC uphill. Thankfully no one was hurt, and that I still run a windshield, or the outcome could have been very different.

Holy shit!! I assume there was a pants check involved after that as well?

Honestly I had glanced down when it happened so all I heard was the bang, then felt a hundred needles stinging my leg from the glass. I thought the cheap Amazon soft shackle had let go, but the end of the rope landed right by my door and I could clearly see the shackle and rope still in tact. Then we figured out what happened.

That's crazy! Glad your ok, close one!!

It'd have been a damn shame to kick cancer's bitch ass (twice? thrice?) just to go out like that! Maybe the PSA should be make sure you check other people's recovery points before they go jerkin' on you 😬

Glas you're alright though! Gunna be tough (annoying, maybe?) to spend the money on new glass for that thing 😂 It'll be like putting lipstick on a pig...but at least you'll have a good looking pig. Or something like that.

Maybe Safelite can epoxy that little chip?

I've got a windshield or two at the house, just have to wait for my Uwharrie season pass to expire 😂

OK, I'm a gonna address the elephant in the room.........What is PSA?
BTW, So glad you are OK, Could have been a lot worse result. You may wanna but some lottery tickets, but then again, you may have used all your luck on this one

@CLRracer in an effort to learn and understand it was a welded on recovery point? Any pictures of it or the vehicle?

I don't have pics, but the recovery point was a semi circle piece of tube welded to a rear tube of the vehicle. Best way to describe it would be to say it resembles a roll cage grab handle, just larger scale and in a location for vehicle recovery. I didn't inspect the break. The owner of the pulling vehicle is a member so they can chime in if they want, but I don't fault him for what happened in any way. I will say it literally took a bulldozer to get me back up the hill, so we weren't exactly being easy on it.

@ghost
My rig. My tow point.

@CLRracer came over the radio, rig was dead at the entrance of Rubicon. The obvious answer, that many of us have and will continue to do is go help.
Got down there and got hooked up and I gave her hell trying to get traction pulling up the trail to get him out. We ended up hooking @Mrxdieselx YJ to me, and essentially had an offroad train chugging up the trail.
We made it a good ways up, before the loop left the chat. It’s an absolutely horrible feeling, and a horrible sound. I’ve seen seen some videos back in the day, of guys getting cut, hurt and worse and the sound of metal tearing and cracking at the same time, is one I do not ever want to hear again.
The loop was 1.25”, .120 DOM welded to 1.75”, .120 DOM.
I’ll state this for clarity, I did not weld it; Not saying I’m a professional, or that mine could or would have been better, I’m saying it because I can’t get the sound out of my head, nor the feeling of ‘what if,’ especially when a friend and his family are in the rig being pulled. After it happened, and everyone was ok, I left to go find Bobby and the dozer to pull him the rest of the way.

Lets say all of the "science of metals" was 100 percent. I'd love an engineer type to chime in with the cross section tensile strength of said weldment. Let's make it easy with the know circumference of the tube and use a cross section of weld equivalent to the size of a fillet expected of 1/8 of an inch.
Any of you modeling engineer type able to calc the strength in a perfect world and a straight line pull?

I'd love to see that damage up close. Glad everyone is good!

As far as I’m concerned, that loop will not go back on.

Looks like one side the metal gave and the other the weld did. I’m leaning toward soft shackles and going around my tubing for future uses.
That’s what I think, but I’m not an expert.
The cross tube itself is deformed slightly, and there is a crack on the left side weld on the bottom side.

And I'm pretty sure the missing piece was yeeted clear back to the start of Rubicon haha.
