I seem to have a knack for being near old folks when the fall (and 1/4 of the time, break a hip). (No, I am not going around pushing old folks over.)

Was at an event yesterday, old lady (80ish) trips over a speaker stand. First thing that happens, is that whoever is with a person, or nearby, rushes right over and starts pulling them and insisting they get up. Even if they say it hurts (and a broke hip can be *very* painful. I got over to her just as a group of octogenarians was trying to get her up off the ground. I tell them to just let her sit a moment, regain composure, and make sure nothing was hurt. Nope....they yanked her right to her feet. Then left her unsteady with only one leg up under her good, and turned loose. I saw that happening, and got hold of her arm until she got her balance back. Otherwise, I'm betting she would have been right back on the floor.

So....if you see an older person go down...remind others that there is no rush to get back up. Yep, it can be embarrassing, but it never hurts to slow down, evaluate, and let them get de-nerved before trying to get up.

Rant over.

Beyond this. Trying to get someone up can cause irreparable damage. Bone fragments can move and can severe arteries and nerves.

And if you think the fall was embarrassing wait until that bone sticks out of her skin and 3 people pass out.
