Putting a 6cyl engine in a 4cyl jeep comanche?

Recently wrecked my old ranger, and Im thinking about buying a jeep comanche to fill her shoes. Ideally 6cyl, 5 speed. (Im looking at one right now from '88)

Problem is, many are 4 cylinders. So my question is, how hard is it to drop a 6 cylinder into a jeep that came off the factory as a 4? Ive rebuilt engines before, as well as any car repairs in between but never done anything as dramatic as adding cylinders.

What other parts will have to be changed to complete the switch? Wiring harness? Radiator? Will the engine mounts need to be moved? Will the computer know what to do with a totally different engine? Does the jeep 5 speed transmission accept 4's and 6's? etc etc etc

I figured that if its possible to drop a 6 in a 4, someone here has done it.

Buddy of mine in florida is currently doing the swap. Says its a pretty tight fit. He's gonna need to move the raditor.

It is a pia. That said, your best bet is to find a doa cherokee as a doner with a 4.0. They are fairly easy to find. It will have almost everything you will need already in it. Pull the motor computer wiring etc...,rebuild motor if needed. If memory serves the 5sp should bolt right up, if not you can always get an adapter from Advanced.

If the Comanche has the 5spd in it now, it's possibly the Peugeot (Pukegoat). Even though some people have had no problems out of it, they're the minority. You're better off going ahead and updating to an AX15 or even a NV3550.

No it will not have the peugeot. The 4 popper only had the ax-5.

I have done it. I have an 86mj with a 94xj 4.0l Do yourself a big favor and buy one with a 4.0l. Not that it is that hard to change but unless you already have a donor xj than you need to factor the price of the donor vehicle into the cheaper price of the 4 banger mj. If you do decide to do this swap you will want to get an 87 or latter. some of the 86 models have a different firewall and you will have to modify header panel and radiator support. Yes you will have to replace the wiring harness and motor mounts that includes a new computer. And the 4 banger bolt pattern is different than 4.0l. So you will need a new tranny. If you need anymore info let me know
