I don't want to make this a whats right or wrong thread... I just want an answer

We are leaving from the raleigh durham airport in April to travel to Vegas. I personally don't wanna go through that xray machine and sure as hell don't want a physically search. I "heard" if you wear clothing that coud hide something you will be asked to step in the xray. I also heard no matter what EVERYone has to go through the xray or searchs. which is it? do I wear something comfy that will most likly cause me to go to the xray because EVERYONE will have to... Or dress to avoid the xray. anyone know for sure?

Yes I know this is stupid for me to waste time on... But if I can avoid the xray that would be awesome. I would not go at all but I had to get out of town to get marry because a big family will cause a HUGE wedding.

I have flown 11 times this month and I have yet to be x-rayed or searched. My suggestion would be not to wear any metal, check your bags i.e do not carry them on board and you should be fine.

Best of luck

It depends on the airport and the carrier, what is at their terminal.
E.g. some airports have them at all terminals, most have them at only some.
And of those that have them at only some, it's common for there to be say, 4 lines, but only 1 or 2 of those lines has the full body scanner.
So unfortunately that means you need to find out what the case is for RDU and the terminal you are using.
I don't know.
I do know that if you fly out of BWI on Southwest, there are 4 lines. 1 has the full body scanner, 3 do not. So look ahead and pick the right line...

I fly several times a month and have never had an issue. I typically fly out of Greensboro which doesn't have the X-Ray machine. But I have went through Toronto that has a an X_ray machine and I did go through it and it took all of 5 seconds. They are not as bad as the news has played them up to be.

I have flown out of Raleigh several times over the last 2 months and never had to go thru the x-ray or been physically searched. In fact, I only saw one person getting searched and none in the x-ray. I was flying up north, so I was wearing heavy clothing. Just take off any jackets, sweatshirts, etc, put them on the conveyor belt to be scanned and you should be fine.

Congrats, btw.

if you strip down naked, they wont xray you.
Best solution yet. I flew from charlotte to chicago to germany, and then back a couple months ago. No scans, no searches. I was really looking forward to the scan, I had my moves all figured out.

Its not as bad as everyone has said. I flew from charlotte to chicago and back recently and different airports do different things....Ex: In charlotte the TSA guy let me go through with my belt and wedding ring on and nothing tripped. Coming back from Chicago I was put in the full body xray and then patted down. Not really a big deal. When they start at your crotch and work down its probably more embarassing for the guy doing it than it was for me....In chicago they made me take everything off before going through the scanner.

Security, almost everywhere, even the TSA is a joke.

Had to go to the ER at UNC hospital a while back. I set off the walk-thru metal detector, wasn't even expecting it as I went in. Security guard gets off his stool, pics up hand wand. I just say "Steel toe boots", and he sits right back down. I was gonna turn around and go back to the car, but just decided to walk on in after he sat back down. I had my PPK/s in my pocket.

Rode amtrak a couple years ago. At the Raleigh depot, about ten minutes before train time, TSA guys (TSA jackets on) come out of the building, take the lids off a couple of trash cans, look inside, then go back to their office. Nice show...but worthless. Guess it was to make the sheep feel safe.

Set off the metal detector at the Lee County courthouse last year (keys, belt buckle, whatever else, had left the good stuff in the truck). Deputy said just come on in anyway. I know several Deputys and the high sheriff, but not this one, and he didn't know me from adam.

I don't fly anymore. I'm not giving up what little I have left.

We're flying out to SoCal for KOH... I can let you know how it goes. Not to go into my feelings/thoughts on the whole scenario, but I do have concerns about the x-ray machines on account of being pregnant... will have to ask the doc next week.

Congrats on getting married! :)

I had jury duty last year and left from work. I for got I had my Grandpa's caseXX sod buster in my pocket. The guard made me turn out my pockets and freaked out when he saw my weapon told me to take it from the building immediately. I smiled and told him if he was worried about the knife he sure didn't want me in there:) he repied by calling for back-up:( long story short I didn't have to do jury duty. Congrats on ty-in the knot.

FYI they aren't X-rays like they use for your luggage. Actually most of those aren't X-ray either.
It's EM based but a different band

when i flew over the holidays they made me walk threw the xray thing everytime.

just do what that lady did when they first started the xray thing, walk up in a bikini then grab your bags and get dressed!

I tried doing that but they said they would beat me :( lol

I told my mom about how I was not looking forward to flying just incase I gotta go through the xray... her response. "I like to keep my rolls to myself, so I will not be going with you"

Thanks for the link... yeah, the regular metal detector deal I'm not concerned about, it's just the new 'backscatter' or whatever machine that has been in the news recently. Like the article says, if the exposure is less than you actually experience while on the plane then, well... <shrug>

I almost got arrested at Wilmington airport for trying to do that. No joke. I've yet to figure out if they actually COULD arrest me, but I got the attention of every TSA agent in the airport at the time, and the sheriff. Long (possibly stupid) story...

Bout to fly to vegas for a couple days before KOH and I'm planning on wearing nearly all my clothes haha. We'll see how stripped down they get me.

You're over thinking it. I fly a bunch. The only thing I do is wear shoes that I don't have to tie to get on and off. And long sleeve shirts because I'm a germaphobe and don't like people touching me. I have a flying shirt that I put on. I have it washed as soon as I reach my hotel then as well. I've never gone through the x-ray or been strip searched.

Thankfully I am not so paranoid like I was early... Just gotta do it. BTW hadfield... Im the same way about people touching me.. why must they enter my personal space I figure is about 10 ft around me :p?

I have metal in my back from surgery so I set off the metal detectors. I've been patted down about 15 times now and gone thru the xray machine on my last trip.

Neither one is a big deal they don't grab your junk during the pat downs. Everyone makes it out to be a much bigger deal than it is. If anything its just a hassle since it takes longer. I like the xray thing it's fast and simple and I don't really care if someone sees a blurry picture of me.

I fly....too often. And, to the best of my knowledge, at least in PDX and SFO, the new scanner things are NOT mandatory.

I've done both now, just cuz I can. I've flown 3 times now since they put the new scanners in.

Once, asked me to go through the new scanner, and I said sure. took like 2 seconds. Asked to see my picture, they refused.

Second, asked me to go through the scanner, and I said I'd rather not (mostly just to see what they'd say). They said "you don't have to, but the alternative is a fairly 'invasive' pat-down". I said "lets try that".....
it wasn't "that" bad. I've been frisked by cops before, some more, some less "invasive". But, to all the fawks that say the "thorough pat-down" (or whatever they're calling it now) is "assault", they need to get out more.

This last time out, they weren't doing shit. Walked through the metal detector, and "have a nice day". <shrug>

and...I go through PDX and SFO security both ways, sometimes more than once, since fawking SFO doesn't have a little smoking room inside security.
