I have an offer on my civic for a 96 zj. The zj is the v8 5.2 and has the quadra trac. I was curious of the trans and transfer case reliability. What issues could arrise? It has 128k miles. 3 inch lift and 32 inch tires. Thanks in advance.

Can't speak to the transmission but the transfer case has a viscous coupler that will wear out and is big $$$ to replace. That said, if it does go out then all you really need do is put in a 231 or the 242 if you like the optional AWD. The 231 is stronger than the 242 but not enough to make a difference unless your planning on going extreme with it in which case you'd want a stronger case anyway.

I was thinking it was a pretty straight forward swap but I wasnt sure. What all would it need to do this swap? Thanks alot for the information I really appreciate it. The particular jeep is a very nice orvis edition jeep in good shape. I dont plan to beat the thing to death. Ill just hit some trails and maybe a little mud once in a while. The main thing I used my last jeep was for playing in the snow during the winter. I sold my previous xj and am now wanting another pretty bad.

I have the 242 stock in mine but plan on putting a 242 in a XJ for my mother-in-law, she lives in the mountains so AWD is great for snow but 2wd is better for MPG.
I pulled every thing attached to the transfer case when I picked up the 242 for her, shifter, interior cover, linkage, etc. My understanding is it will bolt right up but you will need the different parts to shift it properly.

If its got the 44rh (hydraulic) keep fresh fluid in it and you should be ok if it has the 44re drop the trans and find a good replacement. the RE (electronic) are crap. The hydraulic seem to last longer.

42RE/44RE/46RE Transmission

The 42RE/44RE/46RE is a 4-speed fully automatic transmission with electronic governor. The ID numbers are stamped on the case's left side just above the oil pan.

so any rh trans is the good one?

I wouldnt say "good" but from experience and from what Ive learned about the two its the lesser of two evils. Being a 96 they swapped from RH to RE in that year. Some may have the RH and some may have the RE.

Cool, then I would not worry about the VC now.

Sorry, viscous coupler, it is the weak link in the 249 (quadra trac) t-case.
