Question about a ticket.

I bought a vehicle in early October off of craigslist just to turn around and resell. I met the woman at a local lowes hardware at 8:30pm and bought the car off of her and brought my tag off of my current vehicle just to slap on it and drive home on(i've done this for every vehicle I've owned). I only lived 5 miles from where I met the woman. I got pulled on the way home and got a ticket for fictitious tag and no insurance. The officer said I can get the car legal (tagged/insured) blah blah in my name and take the proof to my court date and get everything dropped. I can't go talk to the DA before to get it dropped I have to go on my court date even though I had the car legalized the following week.

My question is I have someone wanting to buy the car right now and I'm just wondering if I will have to hold off on selling the car until after my court date or if I will be okay to go ahead and sell it now? If I were to sell it what should I bring to my court date? If I didn't sell it before then I was going to bring the title, proof of insurance and the registration. I would like to go ahead and sell the vehicle now and make some money off of it. Hopefully someone can chime in. Thanks for the help!

Call and go talk to the DA if he'll talk to you. If not, sell the vehicle, take the registration and insurance info with you dated for when you got it legal. Shouldn't be a problem, and it's what I'd do, but this advice is worth what you paid for it.

Who said you cant talk to the DA early? Some counties even have a DA just for things like this. I got a ticket for expired tags in Wake Co and when I got them current I went to the courthouse and they had a "quick court" line (or something like that) with a DA or two handling small stuff.

Yea, I would sell it if you can. Just take the registration and proof of insurance to court either on your day or early if you can. They won't know you don't own it anymore and it really doesn't matter. It more than likely won't cost you a dime. They will probably look at the ticket, the new paperwork and say have a nice day.

and just remember in the future..you're better off running no tag than a fictitious tag..At least thats what johnny law told me.

don't forget, you will still have to pay court cost

What insurance company? My insurance covers newly purchased vehicles for 30 days even if I don't notify them prior. So, you shouldn't have an issue with no insurance. But, the tag thing, that is what it is...

Sell it if you can and then take care of it. However, if you sell and don't get it registered, etc., and expect it to be dropped, it likely won't. The state is expecting to get their $ either by the fine on the ticket or by registration, title transfer, inspection, etc. from the car. So, either way, expect to spend some $...

Some places you may have to pay for court costs, usually with tickets like this though, (and I've been in the court room way too much and seen it) they just make sure the thing is registered and send you on your way. Hell, here in Forsyth county I was at fault in a wreck (ran a light while reading directions) and when I went to court the (I'm assuming) DA asked me if I had paid to fix the other guys car (Insurance) I said yes and he said OK you're finished. It didn't cost me one red cent in court costs or fines (I was issued a ticket for failing to yield right of way). I was surprised but I just high tailed it out of there before he could change his mind.

Best thing to do when you buy a vehicle is make out a bill of sale and carry it with you. I forget how long you have to get a tag, but it is a week or so. I always immediately call my insurance company when I buy one and then get it tagged in a day or two. I have been stopped and I just show the bill of sale and no problems.

Now as for selling the car. GO for it. You already got it legal so you are good. The DA 'care if you currently own the car or not as long as you satisfied the ticket by getting tags and insurance on it.
