Im going to tow a friends jeep from Fayetteville to Harlan for the Jeep Grand Slam at the end of July. I was wondering what was the best route to take and if anyone knew of any laws I need to take into account in different states (such as mud flaps, etc.)as I have towed around NC, but not ever out of the state. The tow rig is my 03 F250 psd, 6speed, 6" lift, 35" tires (they dont really stick out past the fenders). The trailer is a 18' flatbed equip. trailer I usually pull my 78 F150 with 38s on.

Thanks for any help.

i don't know about the states in between, but I don't think you have much to worry about once you get into kentucky. They will let anything on the road here as long as you have tags, and insurance. And if ya drive at night make sure your lights work. I don't think they care about much else arround here.

thanks for the replies, i'll look into those routes. The trailer im using has brakes on both axles, and the programmer im using (sct), uses the variable turbo as an exhaust brake in the tow tunes (works pretty good). The main thing I was wondering about was if I would be hasseled because my tow rig is lifted, and I dont have mudflaps/ fender flares.

BTW, don't take 421 all the way from NC to Harlan. I tried that the first time I went there. It looks great on the map but it's on of the steepest and curviest roads you'll find. You'll be taking downhill switchbacks at 5-10 mph.

Vanguard - Is there any way to avoid the 421 section of Virginia/Kentucky? That is a steep nasty haul! Or do you have to pick up 421 once you get up there?

BTW - thanks for the awesome directions! made our trip a breeze!

must have safety chains crossed under the trailer tongue, have emergency breakaway lockup for brakes in case it comes loose, all lights must work all the time. positive vehicle securement that you haul, reflectors on all 4 corners of trailer, good tires with at least 3/32nds tread, all suspension in good shape. some states 1 axle brakes and some must have brakes on all axles that work properly and dont think they wont check em ( any dot guy or trooper can or will check you ) dont speed....... best route for a novice is takeu.s. 52 north out of winston-salem to I-77 NORTH , TO I 81 SOUTH INTO TN. THEN TO EXIT 57B ( I-26 NORTH ) TAKE THAT TO US23 NORTH TO 421 NORTH TO HARLAN. GO SLOW DOWN ALL MOUNTAINS AS YOU ONLY RUN AWAY 1 TIME. ( NOTHIN LIKE NOT BEING ABLE TO SLOW DOWN COMMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN........ THING SAFETY AT ALL TIMES, WATCH YOUR WATER TEMP WHEN PULLING ALL HILLS TOO.
