I am about to get out of school for heavy equipment mechanic and the tool set I was planning on getting is from snap on. It comes with sensible stuff to be freshly starting on. Question is will I need a 3/4 inch drive ratchet set as a newbie in the shop?

I have no experience other than that when my grandfather bought a bulldozer one of the first things he bought was a 3/4" ratchet. If a guy up in the woods with one bulldozer needed one, you probably will too.

If you are in a school program that offers you the discount, get that and all you can afford to get. You have a chance to buy quality tools for ALOT less than the snapon dealers can....

Better listen to snappy ...if your program offers the tool discount you better jump all over it ,and get all your pockets can stand ! And yes you will need a 3/4 drive socket set working on heavy equipment such as dozers

What snappy said, if you are getting that great discount and you are serious about being a mechanic buy all you can, and yes you need a 3/4 drive socket set to work on heavy equipment if you can afford a torque multiplier do it, along with a set or two of large wrenches, you can never have too many jimmy bars or too long a jimmy bar, and cheap wrenches are necessary too, you won't feel bad making custom tools out of the cheapies. On big equipment a few custom wrenches can save a lot of time. Just remember, that snap on stuff is really nice, but a high dollar wrench doesn't make a good mechanic

i work for CAT & YES you will need 3/4 drive i use it everyday & also get combination wrenches up to 2"
& do not listen to the people that say you do not need a really good quality tools (like snap on, GP,MAC ) b/c it will save you money
but you will need a cheap wrench set to cut up & make tools
buy once & be done just my .02

Yes, 18 years in the heavy equipment manufacturing business. This is a must. really for the bigger stuff you will need a 1" drive set too.

I agree

basic quality tools up to 2" a good 3-4' breaker bar in 1/2 3/4 and 1" would also be a must
