The fan on our ac unit stopped working some time today. Pulled the cover to check the capacitor and found it like this..

Does this look like it is blown? and if so, where can I get a replacement around Raleigh? I have heard of a place off of six forks but heard that they will only sell to contractors.

thanks

If it's bulging top/ bottom it's done. Mark where you wires go and do some research. United Refrigeration or CC Dickson sell those parts but may be contractor only. Buy one of those contractors a beer and I bet they will get you one.

it seems it bulging at the top. the fan stopped spinning and it was making a buzzing noise intermittently

3 weeks ago mine did the exact same thing. It was the fan, got it replaced. Then Friday night came home to a hot house again and one of the wires on the cap had burned in to. I fixed it, hooked it back to the cap and now it's working great. The Fan was expensive to have replaced. If I were you I'd definitely get it and replace it yourself. It's pretty easy. From what I can tell, buying a direct replacement with the right plug to hook up directly is still fairly pricey. Maybe you could do a little research on specs and mounting orientation and save a little by buying a "universal" fan

I got mine off ebay...took a couple of days but did it myself and cost a hair over 30 dollars with free shipping.

I had 2 incidents with the AC so far this year. First it was a plug in the AC itself that had a crappy connection long enough and melted, then the Capacitor. Both happened on 95+ days, of course. Luckily I have a tech in the family so I didn't blow up the house trying to fix it.
