Looking at getting an 87 Comanche with the 2.5l motor in it. What can u tell me about it? Would throwing a 4" lift on it kill it? Where can u get parts for them? Anybody doing any custom stuff for them? How capable are they on the trails?
Thanks for the info. I love the way these things look!Everything from the steering wheel forward is the same as a Cherokee! So parts are plentiful. 2.5 is weak, but generally will crawl okay, if it is in good shape. Just no power for hi-way driving! Long term I would start looking for a 4.0. Plenty capable, as a Cherokee. You'll want to do the same things to it you would do to a Cherokee. Lose the disco front axle. If it has a D35 rear, start looking for an 8.25 from a Cherkee. Or A Dana 444 from a Cherokee. Or best is a Ford 8.8 out of an Explorer. Do bumpers, sliders, and at least a good headache bar in case of rollover.
Lift kit shouldnt affect anything with the power. Size of the tires and gearing will. Being the 4 cyl, it should at least have 4.10 gears in it.
Oh, yea. And if it has a nice tailgate on it you should immediately remove it...
... and give it to me!
Oh ya I forgot he had that.Ricky, do you remember Phillip that helped us put the engine back in your TJ? He has a Comanche and he knows them well. I think he may have some spare parts lying around if you get it.
that's nice. I need some custom work I know where to come..Fronts do.
I built my rear differently because I added a stronger cross member and dove tailed the the rear fenders.
