Last Sat night about 10 O'clock I went out to lock the garage up and could hear something rummaging around in the back.Turns out it was a big coon,so I just locked the doors and left a window open for him to get out of.Went back out Sun and it had got into a bag of shelled corn my wife had been feeding the turkeys/deer.No big deal, cleaned up the mess and went on.Last night about an hour before dark we were sitting on the front porch and here walks up this coon headed toward the garage.I got up and once he saw me he changed direction.I was always under the impression that any coon out in the daylight was probably rabid, but since it was so late in the day maybe he was just out early???

So rabid coon out in daylight or early bird lookin for supper??

Early bird I'd say. They seem to come out earlier where they feel comfortable and not threatened. I think the rabid thing is middle of the day, not when darkness is approaching.

I think it's a myth though. We've seen raccoons in the woods in the middle of the day doing normal raccoon stuff around creeks and stuff.

They are opportunists, and fairly smart/resourceful. We found a dead one in the woods early this spring, so spent some time learning more about them. Just being out before dark doesn't mean it's rabid, it could be habituated, meaning it's (obv. in your case) not afraid of people. They are also more active when they have babies to feed.

A rabid animal doesn't walk right, and doesn't really eat. They show aggression, not just lack of fear.

Yeah no threat here,my wife and son feed everything.Deer, turkeys rabbits, squirrels, the only thing that's not welcome is possums and skunks.

I was in the kitchen doing some dishes (insert jokes about men doing dishes here) big old coon walked across the yard by the time I got to my shotgun he had gone. It was daylight but they've been lurking around here for years.

One crossed the street in front of my house yesterday about 6pm as I pulled out of the driveway blinded by the sun I about run over it. I hit the horn and it's ass almost passed his front end as it scrambled to get across the road. I watched it shuffle quickly past the neighbors house and down to the creek.

I think they are cool creatures and I like watchin em but I know they can be some mean sob's.

we had one as a pet when I was a kid.

Very cool animals, litter box trained.

Can be a bit destructive, and will terrorize other pets lol

they don't eat at CFA per the other active thread

I don't personally eat at CFA if I can help it.Its not because I disagree w their personal beliefs or any of that its because its just chicken and usually theres better options. My wife loves CFA.
