Raising Chickens

More supplies today. Ended up going with 2x4 fence for the walls of the run, and will do chicken wire for the roof. I got 4x4s for the corner posts and will uses 2x4s for mid posts.

More progress. Bought the remainder of the building supplies, set corner posts and some mid posts for the run, cut the hole for them to get into the run, and started painting. Wife was dead set on barn red with white trim. Will redo the eaves and fix the roof when we do the trim.

If you want to watch a party toss a feeder mouse in with them. We were given 3 more and man do chickens love them.

We heard about it on a joe rogan podcast actually. Told ourfrind that recently had his snake pass away and we tried it. They freak out!

We've seen the girls shred chipmunks and small snakes in the past that tried to get their food.

Well, got some motivation to finish the coop.

Lady is getting rid of her young flock because she's terrified of snakes. Free to a good home. This should get us started and all seem to be good breeds. Coop is nearly complete. Needs a door and finish running the fence.

Built the ramp Sunday. Do I need to add a board for solid surface? Or will this suffice?

Maybe I’m crazy but having chickens and snakes don’t seem to be a common thing,
I know snakes will eat their eggs but loose feed will bring in rats that bring in snakes.

Said she went to her run and there were two. Out there. I'm not a snake fan, but they don't bother me either.

x2. I have snakes around, but havent had any in my coops. Putting fake eggs in the nest box will eliminate a snake, as well as train the birds where to lay.

I had a pretty big black snake get into my elevated pigeon loft 3.5’ off the ground. It ate some chicks and eggs but I redid my door and it hung around and ate the rats that came from my neighbors nasty back yard

Current status. Getting the birds Thursday, but they will stay in the coop for a little while longer as they are still pullets. Should at least give me the weekend to finish the run.

Use a metal trash can to store your feed and you won’t have a rodent problem. Also, don’t over feed as to have it collect on the ground. Snakes like eggs so keep them collected and it won’t be an issue. Coop and run is looking good. That ramp will be just fine!

Don't want to hijack your thread at all @JSJJ388 but we have started doing the same thing. Wife wanted chickens but wanted a "nice" coop. The agreement was she paid for it, Ill build it.

Going to add an outdoor run soon to give them a lot more room. We went with 6 chicks, 4 buff orpingtons and 2 black ones(either easter eggers or astralorphs). They are about 4 weeks old now and will be transitioned into the coop this weekend.

Looks great! We didn't want chick's to start with, but these that we are getting are big enough to stay in the coop I think.

Chicks need to be about 90% feathered to be outside. Prior to feathers they have a hard time regulating body heat so will need a heat source in the night time.

Figured I would put them out in the coop itself with a heat lamp at night. Would that be fine? Don't mind putting them in the basement in the broader with a lamp either.

As long as they have a source of hear they will be good. Keep the food and water close at first till they get used to their surroundings and start to venture.

You better fix them a makeshift pen with a lid and some shavings. They'll shit all over your basement!

I did, but only after I realized how much they shit. Gonna have to hose down the basement after I move them.
