So in the last couple of years Asheville started to blow up with killer mexican/ salsa bar joints. Basically they are your typical mexican joints, but with a salsa bar with nearly a dozen different varieties.
But we can't seem to fing one here in Raleigh. We've found good restaurants, but none with a salsa bar.
How'bout it folks. Where do we find one?

There is a good place right by the toys r us thats going in @540 and us1. San Jose i think is the name. They hand make the guacamole right in front of you. Never had it though.

Chubby's (I've only been to the one on Lake Boone) has something like 6 or 8... Shawn says the one on Miami Blvd. has 3x as many.

Moe's has a salsa bar. Not really the type of restaurant I think you're looking for though, but its damn good!

They don't have a salsa bar but there's a newer place on Hillsborough Street, across from campus, called Chile Bamba that's really good. Also, Dos Taquitos Centro is teh awesome... hmmm... chilequiles.

And here I thought it was cool enough when I get the queso with the spicy sausage in it lol.

Sounds like the next Raleigh-area NC4x4 meet-up should be for Mexican. ;)

We had one of those on Sunday. Kevin and I went to Armadillo.

Sara and I appreciate you bringing us some back.

Matt there is another los tres in fuquay and 2 in cary, but they don't have a salsa bar. Los tres magauyes is def the best food

You want true mexican??? :D

In Durham (I know, its not Raleigh...), there used to be a fantastic mexican place/taco bar/salsa bar in the Lowes Foods shopping center by hwy 70 and 98 intersection. It was in the same parking lot as the KFC. The mexican place was on the far right on the end. Its been years since I was there so I don't even know if its still there. But, it was AWESOME!

But, beware, its not a take yer kids kind of place and you may even question my recommenation when you walk in. But, it was awesome! Its one of those kinds of places that didn't really have a sign out front and when I walked in, everyone turned and looked and the place got quite because I was the only white guy in there... The menu is 100% in spanish, nobody speaks english, even the bottled Coke is from Mexico! They have that fresh nutmeg/rice drink which is really good and even have the cow toung/stomach stew (whatever it is) that is some Sunday afternoon tradition in Mexico. Every time I eat at any mexican place, I always remember how good this place was and nothing to date has ever compared.

I used to go there for lunch during the week when I worked in Durham periodically. I always had some mexican co-workers with me so I always felt comfortable going in there with them. I'd prob. go in there by myself now but would feel way out of place. But, it was worth it for the food!

Gawd, I hope that place is still there! I need to make a detour to Durham.
