Hey ECORS drivers, anyone else who wants to test out their 4x4, and anyone who wants to race a front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive car:

There is a RallyCross (RallyX) race on Sunday 25-September near Clayton. The exact location is here:
http://www.thscc.com/general/directions/bmwfarm.html

It is $30 to enter if you pre-pay. This is a fairly rough course for a car, so I wouldn't recommend taking a daily driver car on it, but plenty of people do. It would be a great course for a beater car, 2WD truck, or 4x4, especially ECORS guys if you want to test anything out. Stock or stock-ish 4x4s (like A-class rigs) are welcome, but the club is wary of anything lifted higher because of roll-overs. Or bring a 2WD truck out there and be guaranteed a class win - no one ever enters in the 2WD "over 2.5L" class. :) It is lots of fun!

These are like autocross, but on dirt. Only one car on the track at a time, course is layed out by cones, the course is about 60-100 seconds long. It is in the open, so no chance of hitting trees.

You get at least 3 morning runs and 3 afternoon, but usually there is an additional practice run for each session, so 8 runs total. Plus after the event, they allow "fun runs", so you could do a bunch of additional laps if you want.

We need to get 25 people pre-registered, or else the event will be cancelled. So pre-register here if you're interested:

Let me know if you have any questions. There is plenty of room for trucks and trailers to park.

Reply to this thread if you have any questions about the event. I'd be happy to discuss.

I race an Audi Coupe Quattro with rally suspension.

More detailed info

The format of a race is that your group gets 3 timed runs in the morning and 3 timed runs in the afternoon. The scoring is cumulative - all your runs count.

While one group is running the course, the other group works the course to watch for knocked-over cones, call them in to the scoring table, and set them back up. Knocked over cones are a +2 second penalty each.

We break for about an hour for lunch.

The race is usually over by 2PM, after which you can have "fun runs" that aren't part of the competition, but are still timed, so you can practice against the clock or just have fun.

You get a small dash magnet if you place in your class, but there is no real trophy or monetary reward.

Most cars stay in 2nd gear the whole track - if that gives you an idea of the speeds.

Lots of people run daily drivers, but some run dedicated RallyX cars that are gutted to save weight, and there are several highly modded Subarus that throw a lot of dirt and are fun to watch. Front-wheel-drive cars are very competitive because they are so light. I got permission to invite stock and stock-ish 4x4s.

You can register for multiple drivers in a single car. Since the runs are solo (only one car on the track at a time), this works out fine, and each driver gets their 6 timed runs.

You can also have registered participants ride with you in your car, which is fun (and is also a good way for your co-driver to get a good look at the course before they run it themself).

Cars have to pass tech, which means no loose suspension joints or bearings (they shake the tires with car on the ground to see if they are loose), brakes work, seatbelts work, no loose items inside the car, can't see the ground thru the floor, etc.

You need an approved helmet that is Snell M, K and SA dated 2000 or newer, or the club has ones you can borrow. Both open and closed face style helmets allowed. DOT ONLY rated helmets are NOT allowed.

I wish I would have come across this earlier because I am really interested. I am really thinking about making the trek to Clayton for this, but I was wondering if you were close to the 25 registered vehicles for this class.

We need 25 people pre-registered by September 20th for this event to happen. There are only 11 registered right now (which is an increase of 5-6 in the past several days). So if you're interested, please pre-register at the link below (you don't have to pre-pay, but you can):

You can click the "entry list" link at the URL above to see how many people are registered for the event.

bump. 15 are pre-registered and there needs to be 25 total. lets get a couple more guys signed up.

Would I be allowed to race in this:

or is it too big?

I have tires now that are a couple inches shorter, and slightly smoother tread if that matters?

Cancelled :(

Thanks for the interest in this guys, but we didn't get enough attendance to make it happen. :(

The other events on the calendar are still on, so pre-reg for them if you're interested.

The Oct 9th race in Wilson is FLAT. I would not hesitate to use a daily-driver car there if you don't mind gravel chips (or if you have mudflaps).

Thanks!
Richard

Tire tread does not matter - it just puts you in the non-street tire class. Anything that is a mud or snow tire, or non DOT tire (like a Rally tire) puts you in the non-street tire class.

For questions about eligibility, I recommend sending a description of your rig to Kourosh at kkneshat@gmail.com with appropriate subject line (like "Can I RallyX this vehicle with THSCC?"). Something that is stock height would be fine. Stock height with bigger tires should be fine. I would say even mild 2-3-inch lift would be fine, but when you get to that point, you should check with the RallyX VP at that email address. It is better to email ahead of time, than to show up and not be allowed to run.

Whatever vehicle you bring, know that it has to pass safety tech, like the tires don't move when you shake them by hand (no bad bearings, ball-joints, or steering parts), the battery is tied down securely, brake fluid is full, brakes feel good when you step on them, steering is tight when you shake the wheel, etc.
