Had a couple folks ask so for any reading along at home...Let's see them.
That's badass. I'm a cowboy boot kinda man. Wouldn't mind a pair of hand made custom boots.Had a couple folks ask so for any reading along at home...
In a disposable import world, if you are a cowboy boot guy - ML Leddy is still a 100 year old throw back.
You can go in their store and buy a pair of the Vaquero boots. Which are very high quality hand made in Leon Mexico boots that are your typical boot buying experience. Pick a size and color from their available selection pay the man and leave.
But true 'Leddy's' - those are a bit different.
Every pair is still 100% hand made in their San Angelo store and factory. There is no "size"...you go in for a tailoring. The process took just over 2 hours. They make multiple traces of both feet individually, they take about 15 measurements in total. Then you pick out every aspect of the boot. Material, color, stitch pattern - those are obvious. But heel height...and it isnt a pick from these options...want a 2-13/16" heel instead of 2-3/4". No problem. Once you complete the selection process they go to the production que, where a old school cobbler hand carves a wooden last specific to your foot. Then the boots are custom made off your custom last. At any point once they start working on your boot you can drop in San Angelo and watch them work. It's old school craftsmanship. The walls of both stores are lined in "red books"..every pair of boots they've ever made. All those measurements and last details are stored in hand written books. Want a new pair in a few years? Just call them up given them your name, they will pull your page - go find your custom lasts in the warehouse and make you a new pair. Second pair lead times are 3-4 months. The hand made last is the long lead part.
After your boots are ready, you have to come in for a fitting. No shipping to you. If you aren't 1000% satisfied with the fit and feel, they make you a new pair - no charge and just sell your boot on their back room shelves.
It's as much a work of art as it is footwear - and if you keep it relatively simple, its not that much more expensive than a nice pair of mass produced machine stitched boots. Of course, if you really want to be a oil baron you can spend 5 figures on a pair of boots...
It's been a bucket list item from me ever since I first heard of them 15 years ago. The opportunity presented itself with this trip for my daughter's grad school interview so I booked a tailor appointment. Now I wait.
I wouldn’t know a good pair of cowboy boots if they kicked me in the teeth, but I enjoyed reading this and appreciate the dedication to the craft.Had a couple folks ask so for any reading along at home...
