I just don't understand people anymore.

Last week I get a text from one of my guys. Late 40s, married, kids, stable mature dude. Well as mature and stable as construction workers get anyway IYKYK.
Dude: Hey man. Any OT coming up next two weeks sign me up. Really need about 15 more hours this month going to be tight on mortgage payment.
Me: Cool I got ya. We can work at X on Friday - we arent behind enough to need OT but if it helps ya out we will just get ahead.

This AM. PTO request from same dude for a week in August. In the why section 'Going to Panama City with Wife, daughter and son in law.'

WTF - you cant pay your damn mortgage but you are taking a vacation? Meanwhile I sit here having not taken a day off since 2021....I just dont get people.

People living on credit buying things they can't afford. Blows my mind. That said, I take every single vacation day I get. Even if I just catch up at the house or go work a race. Its part of the compensation so I intend to get it.

My take away is your a responsible dude and you deserve a vacation!

actually the duder in question does not have a credit card, no debt that way. Just scrapes by week to week. I guess my point is more if I didnt have a few months mortgage in savings I wouldnt be taking a vacation.

Mind you this is a guy making over $35/hr and his wife works full time as well and makes decent money.

Fair enough. We've certainly been there with just scraping by. But we have the same philosophy on vacation, if we dont have a solid emergency fund, we arent going on a big vacation.

it truely blows my mind how many people live like this. One of our PM's has had to ask the restaurant on mountain to open his tab to pay for dinner/lunch several times this year already. i finally had to tell him he wasnt allowed to eat there if he couldnt pay for it. this guy is making 6 figure, doesnt pay for fuel, or living expenses....
