Tip #1.............If you can afford it, pick up the phone and hire a roofing co. a good one is worth every dollar you spend
Tip #2 If you skip tip #1, inspect the neglected roof carefully for signs of rotten wood like soft spots or creaking when you walk on it and stains or apparent rot on the wood when viewed from underneath the roof and add about 25 to 50% to your estimate of the scope of the damage. Also poke the plywood and trim here and there w a screwdriver and again about double your estimate of damage you note this way.
tip # 3 assemble alot of tools and supplies and then get some more ( just in case ) and listen to some tunes while you work.
Tip #4 lay old tarps on the ground around the worksite to catch nails and use a wheelbarrow and or your trucks bed as a handy place to throw the shingles, nails and rotten wood into and expect 25% to miss these containers so don't use your truck if its all purty and stuff.
tip # 5 do this work in the morning or evening when it's hot outside, but not in the dark.
Tip # 6 Use a flat shovel if you don't have a roofing one and shove the shovel underneath the tarpaper towards the peak of the roof carefully and pry on the nails as you hit them to remove most of the nails and shingles w the shovel as opposed to just ripping off the shingles w the shovel and then pulling the old nails w hammers and prybars.
Tip # 7 a claw hammer will grab/pull the nails w the heads broke out easily if you pull sideways on the nail w the claw of the hammer instead of straight over.
Tip #8 a piece of foam rubber makes a nice place to kneel, sit or laydown on when you get tired and it's quite refreshing to lay on the roof in the shade and enjoy some rest now and then while the mosquitoes buzz around and bite you.
Tip # 9 drink plenty of Water, Tea etc. to stay hydrated but change to beer when you start to get tired and frazzled as the scope of work keeps increasing as you reveal more and more rot you did'nt expect ( see Tip #2 )
Tip # 10 If it feels like a pebble in in your shoe it's probly a dull rusty nail poking a hole in your heel and you should probly wear boots instead.
The last tip ( but there may be more coming ) Don't try to talk your friends into helping or don't expect much even w an offer of free beer!
