Fellow board folks. I came across a 1995 Range Rover in a junk yard this weekend. I robbed the on board air compressor and air tank from it. My question is this.... How strong are rover axles? What would they compare to in regard to axle strength. Then there were the air bags at each corner... It got me to thinking....

I think the Rover axles are pretty strong. Rovers are an outstanding off road rig if you can keep them running. The other thing to get if you get the axles is the wheels. They have a wierd bolt pattern.

95 range rover.. isnt that the same running gear as a d90 of similar erra.. if so they're pretty strong off the bat. they're alot like yota axles just alittle weaker. theres mods to fit longs in them with a yota center. and their's chromolly axle shafts available f/r

That's the County LWB at LKQ's isn't it?

They have full-floating rears, rear discs, plenty stout axles (due to smaller ring and pinions with tall ratios), etc. That 4.2 under the hood isn't a bad powerplant either. Issue here is gearing, Rovers do some extra gear reduction in the t-case (like samurais) so the ratios may be too tall for you.

I was really surprised to see a rig like that in LKQ's yard, but they have surprised me before. I will probably be heading out there this Saturday AM to pick a few things off I found on other trucks.

Axles and CV's are good up to 33's, if you're easy on the skinny pedal. Diff is the non-hypoid design which is a little less stout (hence the conversion to Toy center sections). If you go anywhere past 4.10's, you will be on borrowed time. On that note, Ring and pinions have to come from Australia, or UK. There are only two aftermarket manufacturers that I know of. As stated, full floaters on both end as well. On a good note, Bobby Long is now producing a replacement set of half shafts and birfields for the front end. You can buy them (and rear shafts) from a place called RoverTracks in Longmont CO.

jC (13 years and counting on rover axles.....)

OnlyOne, you got it. It is the Rover at LKQ. I was very surprised to find it there. I use LKQ for standard stuff, like motor brackets, fan blades, etc...

Thanks for all the help on the Rover axles. I had no idea it they were worth pulling or not. It is a self pull yard, so that makes for a lot of work! I think I will let them go. I was hoping that compressor was something to have, sounds like it's junk. Oh well, I got a good air tank out of it!

Thanks again!

That was a thanks to everyone!
