So I bought a new 2012 ram 3500 in October 2012. Night I bought it and got it home I noticed that it was scratched badly in several places. Mainly corners of the cab and fenders. I called the sales man and told him that they scratched it badly when they washed it while we were finishing the paper work. The manager had me bring it in and they agreed to fix it.

They had a outside company that does mobile paint repair(color match auto or something like that) come out and fix the places that were through the paint and they buffed the whole thing. It looked perfect when I got it back. I was happy.

Fast forward to today and evidently Ray Charles and Ronnie Milsap still work there washing the vehicles. I took it in for a recall on the tie rod and to have new rear fender flares installed after the factory ones had come loose in a few places.

The truck is covered in very deep swirl marks and some scratches. The truck was dirty when I took it in but the paint was in perfect shape. No swirl marks at all and definitely no scratches. I am very anal about keeping my truck nice. Thing that pisses me off even more is that I specifically asked the service manager to make a note to be careful with the truck because of the last time they had it.

I am worried that after being buffed so much the first time to remove the scratches and now the need to be seriously buffed all over again that it may effect the lifespan and effectiveness of the clear coat. My understanding is buffing it removes a little clear coat to even out the surface causing it to be more shiny. If they have to buff it yet again to remove some serious scratches then how much clear coat is left.

I bought this truck to have for a long time and this just pisses me off. What would y'all ask to be done about it? Am I overreacting about the effect buffing will have on it? Sorry for the long post but I work hard for my money and the payment that comes with that truck aint cheap.

Don't have any recommendations but buffing does not remove the clear. It heats it up and causes it to level out. I am sure some is lost but don't think it is quantifiable.

Chevrolet.
Problem solved.
Fiat should not make twucks w/a Cummins engine.
:flipoff2:

I've actually always been a Chevy guy but I liked the Cummins better. And the interior in my new one is nicer (in my opinion)than Chevy or ford

My understanding has always been that on modern cars, the clear coat really isn't a concern when buffing. Older vintage cars used a different paint system, and it is very easy to buff straight through the clear coat on those. Most professional detailers who work with older vehicles have a device that tells them how deep the paint/clear coat is in sections to make sure they can even buff it.

An idiot can buff right through clear coat. If your truck was dirty when you took it in, they probably didn't wet it very well before washing. Wetting it thoroughly before washing suspends dirt particles off of the surface and makes removal much easier. Sounds like they have a harsh automatic wash they run cars through and its beating your truck to death.

Yeah my truck was filthy. I took it back this morning and they sent me to their body shop. Guy there said he has to fix a lot of these from retards washing them. He assured me it wouldn't cause a problem down the road. They are also gonna fix a small rock chip in the fender for me while they have it for free. Hopefully when I get it back it is better than new.

I miss driving beaters that I don't care about.

Check out my rental. Nothing says I'm sorry like letting a customer drive this home.

I keep contemplating a newer, nicer truck, and keep coming back to that point. I was putting some chains in the back of my truck the other day and one of the hooks swung down and dented my tailgate, and I didn't care, and that made me appreciate my beater truck.

I try to keep mine nice but with my kid its tough, and heck its only a truck so I'm not too concerned about it. Now if I had a new truck ...you dang right I would be picky as all get out!!

I love my beaters, I own 3. I have way less than 2k in my xj and I get in dusty and carry anything that will fit in the back. I have less than 3k invested in my Powerstroke and it's 8/10 for a 99. My work van had been around for 7-8 years, has 250k on the odometer and other than a dent in the door (caused by someone else, leading to Powerstroke) and runs like a champ.

I don't abuse any of them and keep oil and maintenance, but don't cry over scratches.

So I went and pi ked it up a bit ago and there isn't much improvement. I can still see everything I did before they got it. Also noticed on the way home that the windshield appears to have swirl marks in it. What in the world did these retards wash my truck with that would have put swirls in the glass?

This thread is why I continue to use a 93 Chevy 3500 to tow & haul with. I just don't think I could deal with making payments then trying to keep a truck nice. SO I keep what I got make occasional repairs & keep on towing & hauling without worrying about the paint.

Don't get me wrong I work my trucks hard. I just like them to look good while doing so. A scratch in the bedside from loading something wouldn't bother me as much as these swirl marks cause by incompetence.

I'm not afraid to work her.(by the way hand loading all those pavers sucked. Made 2 trips with truck and trailer)

No my buddy had something going on with a newborn baby. Them things are always getting in the way.

So this crap is still going on.I went to pick it up again today and it is worse now than ever before. They have managed to scratch through the paint on the new flares they installed and cover every inch of rubber and plastic trim in dried wax.

The service manager is now saying they didn't cause the damage and they can do no more. Go get a lawyer if I don't like it.

I'm fed up with this crap and don't know what my next step is.

I'd start w/ pics and a phone call and email to the Regional Manager.
