Spring RCPFA Cheap Truck Challenge (CTC)

Unlimited Members are invited to field a team (In the capacity of Team Captain)
Other Participants and Spectators are not required to be members

Saturday, March 29th, 2014
Location: Big Boy's Playground (Harrisonburg, VA)
Start Time: 9:00 AM (teams must arrive by 8:00 AM)

Think you and your buddies have got the scrounging skills to build a crawler for $1,200? Here's your chance to do just that and pit your creation against your fellow cheapskates, tightwads, and penny pinchers!

Find it!

Pick your favorite beater and modify it as little or as much as you want all within the budget cap of $1,200 greenbacks. Massive sheetmetal cutting, spring overs, welded spiders and dry rotted 33's are the weapons of choice here. What you end up with probably won't be pretty or particularly capable, but that's all part of the fun.

Build It!

Spent the majority of your crawling fund already? The CTC is the perfect opportunity to team up with your fellow club or forum members and split costs. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your buddies buying and building a beater in the pursuit of cheap truck glory on March 29th!

Beat it!

OK... I wanna race !!! Do I pre register & show up or do I need a RCPFA Unlimited member to sponsor me & my crew in ???

Team captain (who must also be one of/ the driver) must be a club member. Membership details available at RCPFA.com. Once you've got your member/team captain, we'd prefer you preregister for the event.

To be clear, team captains can get a membership now to participate in the CTC. You don't have to have a pre-existing membership.

You're team captain can even become a 90 day unlimited member on the day of the event on site, if you so choose, we'll accept cash or checks there. Keep in mind that the Team Captain is required to be a driver as well, And Jay won't be there the day of the Event ;). you could become a registered user over at the rcpfa.com web site, and try drafting a team captain that way if you don't want to become a member yourself...

So far all the vid's I can find of Big Boys Offroad Park are of ATV's and dirt bikes and one of some Jeeps driving really slow through the dirt/mud trails and ditches ... looks like more of a SPEED course since there seems to be a minimal amount of rocks.

Anyone else have any pic's of video of this place they could share?

So if we register at the rcpfa website is there a link to become a unlimited member? Or does the registration count as being a member? Sorry for the confusion...

Yes, membership information/links are available once you register on the RCPFA forum. Forum registration is free, however club membership is $90 for a quarter year or $250 for a full year.

Thanks for the support of RCPFA and your interest.

Stuntman, Infamous, and untchabl, sorry to hear you can't make it, but congrats on the buggy and baby(!).

We set up the course yesterday and it looks like it'll be a lot of fun, incorporating sections of a motocross course, wooded trails, a little mud, and some minor rocky stuff.

Wish I could make it up there, I sold my XJ 2 months ago since my MBA program has killed all my free time. Had a blast watching the first one.

That's a beauty, meangreen! We'll see you there.

I'll be shooting Video from the Scout, we'll see if I make it through any laps this time...

OK, so a great day of racing, trail repairs, bashing trees, more trail repairs, pulling stuck vehicles around and out, and oh yeah, Trail Repairs!

Not Losers;

Team Butter-face - Fastest Heat
Team Cody - Longest Run in the Pits.

We lined up shortly after 9am (Kind of a record to get things going that close to schedule) for a parade lap with a couple stops to point out the finer nuances of the course (Read, help with the navigationally challenging portions) And before we even completed the lap Team Butter-Face started running into some issues, He shut down during one of the navigation briefings to cool off as he was running pretty hot. The Grand restarted fine, but by the time we got back to the starting area, there was a steady stream of steam pouring out of his relocated radiator. A break was taken before the first heat. various repairs, involving eggs, torches, and 110 electrical cords were made, and they were ready to compete again. everyone lined up at the starting line, and were released in two. Before even completing the first part of the course in the field, team ODBA's Scout Died with the wire to the fuel pump breaking free (This would continue to be a problem for them throughout the day), Part way through the wooded portion of the course, Next Level's Bronco ran into fuel issues as well, not far beyond that, Team IDK's XJ ripped it's Steering box completely through the unibody rail. Team Cody's Yota (Captain, Cody, Driver, Cody), Lost his front driver's wheel, and Team Mean Green (Yota) had fuel problems as well. Leaving the team Butter-Face as the only ones to actually complete the heat, with a time of 11 minutes and 55 seconds (Unadjusted).

After a long break to complete repairs everyone except MeanGreen was able to get there vehicles to the starting line again. On the second heat, Team ODBA continued to be plagued by fuel issues, then lost an argument with a tree that pushed the radiator back into the clutch fan, ending the heat for them. Team IDK ripped the steering box thru the frame rail again. Orange (Next Level) sheered the bolts of his steering box ending the heat for him. Team Butter-face had a catastrophic failure of the cooling system, ending the heat for them. This left the only finisher in the second heat as Team Cody, with a time of 16:10 (Unadjusted for Frugailty Bonus).

After more repairs, and some free time for spectators with rigs to wheel and check out the course, a few brave souls braved the mud pit to compete for the Coveted Coil and Rotor trophy. Team ODBA made a total of three attemps, all ending in an unstuck, but stalled truck in deep water. Team Butter-Face met with a similar fate in the pits. Team Cody made it through the the "easy" side of the pit, making it look as easy as it had a reputation for being, so then he went for the tough side. He actually did pretty well on the tough side too, making it more than halfway through before he couldn't make anymore forward progress, and even then, he was able to back out of the pit to the side under his own power.

We then did the buyout phase (No takers despite some of the fine iron offered at rock bottom prices!). Then did the awards and thanks.

I want to thank everyone who helped organize the event; YJRyan, JeepNChris, JeepNHeather, Tippyman, DWilson, Uglygp, DAZ, AutoTraker, and Kelly S. the owner of Big Boys. You were all extremely Important in making this event a success.

And a very big Thank You to all the participants who came out, Without you we wouldn't be able to do events like this!
