I hate it, but we now have a fake one. The wife was always talking about getting a faker, but I dug in deep. The final straw was the year we had bugs. We noticed little black grains of stuff a few days before Christmas scattered under the tree. Didnt really think much of it. After Christmas, the removal of lights and ornaments was uneventful, it was when I grabbed the bare tree that things got nasty. I grabbed the truck of the tree about mid-height and was like WTF, it was covered in something cold and slimy. I pulled the branches back and really looked closely at the trunk...it was 100% covered in these little bugs and I had squished a million of 'em I guess we had bug dupers all over our presents.
That was it for the wife, within a few hours she had picked up a faker @ the after Christmas sales.
HAS to be a REAL tree for it to be a true Christmas. When I left for college, my Mom got a fake tree and I told her I wasn't coming home for Christmas unless we had a real tree The wife and I now go cut a tree up in Sparta or Boone every year.
Hell we put up 2 or 3 trees a year. At least one is real, the others have a 50/50 chance of being real. I will say for the people who choose a fake tree, spring the extra coin and get a pre-lit tree. It is very nice not to have the wrap the lights around it.
We just picked up our (real) tree from a local guy up the street.
$28, and more importantly, the boy (5) gets to pick out "just the right one".
We don't go for the biggest best prettiest tree - no, instead we "rescue" that poor tree in the corner that has a funky side, that we know will be left orphaned for Christmas w/o our salvation. Yep, the Charlie Brown tree.
I grew up w/ fake trees - every year it was a big family event to sit around and assemble the tree, like a bunch of guys might put together a bike or buggy or something, lol. Never really thought much of it 'til we got married - wife would have nothing of it.
in retrospect, the PITA of keeping up w/ the fake trees, having to be careful w/ them, etc... just isn't worth it. Plus you miss out on the smell!
We have a fake one now,but have had real ones in the past.I prefer the real ones but the wife is the one who picks the pine needles out of the carpet and keeps it watered and she prefers fake.
We go to the mountains and get a real one fresh cut. Last year it sat on our deck and was green until the end of May, just from rainwater. Because it is fresher, it doesn't drop needles like the local lot ones do.
We always go and cut a fresh tree, never know how long the cut trees have been down. It is also cool for my daughter to pick the tree, ride the hay ride, and play around the field.
we always started harvesting trees and baling for first shipments right after halloween. it took till christmas to get the sap off of your hands. so most trees just stood vertical, baled waiting in huge bunches out in the yard/field for the market to open - usually the weekend before thanksgiving. they never got watered but were out in the rain.
Fake, pre lit but only get one where if one bulb goes out the rest stay lit. A royal PITA to find a bulb out on one! We had a 12 foot real tree the first year the cathedral celing was done on the new addition to the house. It was so heavy, it crushed the tree stand. It took up half the room and had to be wired to the curtain rods to stand upright. Watering it was a major pain cause you had to crawl on your belly like 8 -10 feet to get to the center. And there were enough needles on the floor by Christmas to make another whole Christmas tree. After that year both parents said never again and it's been fake ever since.
