Setup a rear 60 out of a 78 f250 w/ 5.13's and spool. Backlash to a think 6. Pattern looks great, but the whole diff get's hot as crap from the cover to pinion. It looks like now, I may have blown my pinion seal b/c i have oil coverin' the pinion that's angled upward. I mean after like 10mins of drivin' this thing is stovetop hot. NO noises or anything, but this can't be good. The pattern looked good....the only thing I'm questioning is the pinion shims. Do the ford 60's use crush sleeves??? There isn't one on this one...my problem??? Just throw out your ideas and experiences to help figure out what my problem is? Also if anyone has the tools to setup gears and wouldn't mind helpin' me take a look at it:rolleyes: I would very appreciative:driver: Thanks guys

Adam,
Some 60 gearsets are crush collar and some are shimmed.

What did you set the pinion preload to? Did you put the baffles back in when you did the gear setup? Did you pre-grease/lube the bearings so that they do not start dry? What type of driving were you doing prior to the leak/temp problem?

If you want to swing it by the shop today, I will be more than happy to take a look at it real quick.

IF it's getting hot, might not be too good of an idea to drive it that far. I do think I would look at a trailer to haul her up there.

Almost sounds like he might have not used the pinion bearing preload shims. Being a older rear, there would not be a crush sleeve.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I was thinking.

Mine did this for a while. Too hot to touch, I put a infrared thermometer to it once, and it was generally between 230-240 degrees. I couldn't narrow down a hot spot tough. Then I changed the oil to Amsoil synthetic, and either changing the oil, or using better quality oil seemed to make all the difference in the world. Now it still gets plenty warm, but not way too hot. I pulled the cover last week to inspect some stuff, and the backlash was perfect and the pattern was great, so it didn't damage or change anything. I ran it hot for probably 10k miles or more, and its been "fixed" for the past 10k or so.

Also, mine is a shim style.
