I was pretty sure this noise was my t-case, but I swapped it out, and I think I still have the noise. In my 99XJ, I have the factory 8.25 rear axle with a powertrax NoSlip. I bought this Jeep brand new, so I know it is the factory 3.55 axle, r/p, bearings etc., now has 140kmiles on it. I put the NoSlip in a few years ago. I had it on jackstands today to level it out when filling the t-case. When I fired it up, I ran it thru the gears, and have an awful growling noise coming from the rear end when I let off the gas. To my uneducated eye, everything looks and feels good. I popped the diff cover, the NoSlips go/nogo gauge block fit properly. The r/p pattern looks a little funky. Any ideas what I should look for?

Pinion feel loose in the housing?

Remove your driveshaft and check for play up and down and side to side from your pinion bearing.

Since the cover is off. Check all the bearings. Take out the chunk and inspect the carrier bearings. Manually side load the carrier before hand with a big pry bar. If any movement is present the carrier bearings are toast. With the chunk out check the pinion for any slop an all directions, then check rotational smoothness. I suspect the pinion over the carrier. Repaired a few of those. You want get a good feel for the condition of the pinion while trying to turn the whole chunk.

I lifted mine 4.5" today and noticed the exact same growl from mine when I let off the accelerator. I would love to know what this is as well

Tony my 8.25 rear roars on decel too. Let me know how much it costs to replace the bearings :kaioken:

remove the drive shaft and check the joints, this happened in one of my xjs and could tell till i removed the shaft from jeep that the joint was loose, I thought it needed a rear end

Was there glitter in the oil you drained? Glitter in oil is good sign of bearings.

Or a stripper been living in there!:D

(sorry...couldnt help that!)

Most likely a rear end bearing. And a bad bearing will also cause funky gear patterns.

But def check the driveshaft joints first!
