rear pinion leak

I just replaced the rear pinion seal in a TJ Dana 35c rear end. Now it is leaking worse than before.

I checked the yoke for wear and there didn't seem to be a groove in it.

I used a Timken seal, is there a better brand to try?

Also, when I took the pinion nut off, there was a lot of play in that bearing. Is it normal for play to be there with the nut off?

Unfortunately my torque wrench only goes up to 150, so I marked the nut and set it back to the mark.

I guess the easiest thing to try is to borrow a proper torque wrench and reinstall another seal.

Although I think it did have a bit of side to side play. I'll check it again this weekend. How difficult is that bearing to change?

In a nutshell, it's a pain in the ass to do on a disposable axle. If you really want to keep the axle but are wanting a gear ration change, now's the time to do it. Google will show you everything involved and you decide for yourself.

Okay, so after a google search, I think I will just try a different seal and hope the rear-end will stay together until I can find a Dana44.

This is my first jeep, so I haven't monitored classified ads. How often do TJ specific Dana 44's come up, and what do they generally go for? A quick look on car-parts show they are $1000-$1500 from a junkyard.

minimal if any

GO talk to Chase at ECGS, he's right next to Fred Anderson Toyota on Hwy 70 ( Glenwood ave ) turn in like you're going to the Toyota store, take your first left.

Get the 8.8 and never worry about it again. I did it years ago and haven't had an issue since, wheeling hard on 36's on beadlocks. You lose a little clearance, but peace of mind is worth it. BTW, that's a smokin price on the 8.8. You can barely do that axle yourself for that kind of money.
