I am freshening up my jeep 4.0 before I install it in my CJ8. The engine is currently on the engine stand and is getting the head gasket replaced. I want to go ahead and put a rebuilt head on it while I am at it. The question is do I just have my head rebuilt locally or do I buy a rebuilt one off ebay? My only concern with my head is that it has some rust build up in the cooling passages from the jeep sitting for a long time very low on coolant. Will the rebuilding process clean that out?

Are there any good cylinder head shops around Raleigh?

What casting number head do you have now?

I can assure you the summit head is out of the question. My only concern with using my existing head is the rust/corrosion in the cooling system part. When you take the thermostat out you can see rust all the wall back in the head. Since the casting is so rough anyway its hard to tell just how bad the rust is. The lady that answered the phone at CHS said the head would get tanked but she didn't seem to know if it would remove the rust or not.

you want 100% buy a new head, then you know what you've got.

buying a reman head you have no idea what was actually done to it to get it back into shape, welded cracks across valve seats, thats great, and can hold well, or not, did the guy that reinstalled the valve seats after the weld repair do it properly ? I had an exhaust seat drop out on a reman'ed 22RE head, sucked, just out of the 90day warranty and I had to do the job again. and buy another head.

You have a head that works, you have no known issue with it at this time, tanking will clean it up, the rust may or may not be an issue. but at this time, you know it's useable,

build it.
