Hey guys I bought a 85 Toyota Pickup a while back with a 22re in it. Motor stopped running. Thinking it's head gasket and/ or piston rings. Needing y'all's recomendations on who to have, or can rebuild it. Am on a pretty tight budget. I am located in Boone, NC. Thanks

I do not know any mechs out that way but after having a couple of those engines I will put this out there. I recommend running a factory or a very good timing chain set up. Those cheap ones are not worth it. Least were not back 15-20 years ago. Things have probably gotten better but I paid the price once. That's all it took.

Poteats engines in charolette I just got a 22re with brand new head and 2 year warranty for 950 out the door there easy to put in

Have heard mixed reviews about poteats. Guy I work with owns a shop and got at 350sbc from them. Installed into a customer's vehicle and it shortly developed an issue. Don't remember what it was but it was internal. They shipped him the parts but wouldn't reimburse him for his labor to fix it.

I rebuilt mine a few years ago. IIRC, I had a little over a grand in it doing everything myself except the machine shop. The machine shop I used built the short block after boreing the cylinders and turning the crank. A price of 950 out the door scares me. These engines are easy to work on.

I have got a few engines from them over the years I watched them biuld mine the warenty is just on parts not Labor but they will fix it if you pull the motor back out

I am also very interested in feedback on Poteats. It seems like there is about 1/2 a dozen engine builders right in that area that offer rebuilt 22re's for similar prices. My truck has coolant in the no. 1 cylinder and with 250k on it I'd rather rebuild it or put in a new motor than fix it. Talked to the people at Poteats on the phone, got a reasonably good vibe but can't tell. Just like everything else in the automotive world, their reviews are extremely mixed.

Mainly I'm wondering where they get the new heads they put on. If anyone has any more feedback on them, speak up!

If you are willing to drive to Norwood, HP engines is awsome! I have used him a bunch, great price and awsome work. I build a few 22re and used him for all the mill work. Didn't need the plasti gauge!!! Everything was dead nuts!!! Found out how cheap he was to put it together and never looked back!!
