Ive been workin on a LS swap into a YJ I bought for my wife. Its gettin close to time to fire it up and want to know your thoughts on which Kind of antifreeze to use.Its just your basic cast block alum head 5.3 but Im usin a alum rad with it.So,red or greene anti freeze,I hate to pay $15 a gal for red if green will do but I will if need be.

i use cat red ELC in everthing i own

1) thats a lot of money in anti freeze for a gasser
2) SCA in a gas engine can be a bad idea...

I used to strictly run the DexCool like GM suggests, but after my 2nd thermostat replacement, I decided I would just go with the green stuff. It says it'll mix with anything and is safe for aluminum, so why not? The DexCool had nothing to do with the thermostats failing, I just got tired of buying it and it also smells horrible to me.

Dexcool has everything to do with hundreds of thousands of intake gaskets failing, coolant sludge clogging everything and general lawsuitiness. I don't know why anyone would use that junk. Buy the cheapest green stuff autozone sells and replace it every couple of years...

I spent about all day flushing the dexcrap out of my 98 4.3 motor after I found an intake leak and had to replace the radiator because it would not flush clean. I've had zero problems after switching to the green stuff. My Toyota is only driven occasionally, but the 10 yo radiator and coolant still looks brand new.

Just like @braxton357 said, I would use the green stuff from your favorite retailer. More importantly, use distilled water as opposed to tap water. Distilled water will not aid in electrolysis like "hard" water will.

Dexcool is fine as long as you play by its rules. Problems arise when you do something silly, like sneeze while checking fluid level. Then it loses its dexcool, craps the bed, and tries to find the quickest way out of your motor. It supposed to be better now than it was, but I still wouldn't use it.
