redrilling a round pattern NP205 in order to clock it?

been looking awhile on here and pirate and why are folks NOT clocking the round pattern NP205 by redrilling them? don't see the issue really. school me.

btw, I plan on a rear mount support since that sucka is so heavy.

Not too familiar with the NP205, but if its like NP231/D300/etc, its easier to just redrill the trans for clocking.

It's just a big flat piece of cast with tapped holes in it. Depending on the trans, you could redrill the holes in the tailhousing and maybe even locate a new dowel. I'm with Matt - that would be easier in comparison.

It's very doable. My last drivetrain was a 4l80e and 205. I went completely flat with mine and had to be selective on driveshaft tubing size because of clearance. It was a figure 8 so clocking had to be done by a special clocking ring. I see it done occasionally on the th400 but make very sure you can clock it without running into trans pan/driveshaft issues. The other round pattern came on later sm465s and clocking those are possible by redrilling but considering the bottom of the 465 is lower than the 205, what's the point.

the 205 in stock form hangs down 2" past the Nv4500. Im clocking up 10 degrees to make them both flush on the bottom. They are both huge so I need as much room as possible. It is a round pattern 205 and I like the fact that when I clearance into the tail housing adapter, that I miss the ribs. Im using the adapter to transfer the hole patten. How much 'meat' should be left -at a minimum- between the old and new holes? Talked to several machinists and got several opinions. Im going to green locktite some set screws in place of the old holes in the case. currently theres about 0.25" between the holes. Not too much, but just enough.

I'd shoot for half the diameter of the thread. Ideally, the diameter of the thread. Realistically, you could probably go really thin, because there should not be any bending moment on the bolts, only tension, especially if its doweled.

I was going to post general rule of thumb would have the diameter of the hole distance from edge to edge. 5/16" dia bolts = 5/16" of meat between the holes. Realistically, I think you could go less and be fine just like Jeepinmatt posted.
