got a 99 dodge 2500 ext cab 2wd 360 auto with 3.55 gears.have a 18ft goose neck(2400lbs) and a 66 bronco that is about 5000 to 5500lbs. pulls fine but want to pull better think 4.10 gears will help? i know sell it and get a cummins want one bad but would be cheaper to regear.
thanks,
bryan

Sure it would help, but it's not the answer. Not even a good patch. Get the Cummins if you want to tow. I have a 96 Dodge 2500, 5.9L with 4.10 axles pulling 5000k and would like to switch to a Cummins myself.

hmmm... guess I better toss my truck away too :shaking:

The 360 is a fine motor and I think with some gears you will be fine with the truck. At least 3.73s maybe 4.10s depending on your tire size and the RPM range your motor works well in..

Re gearing is a definite option. But there are other mods that would help too. I would look at upgrades to the engine as in ignition, cam, intake, and exhaust, and possibly injectors.

I'm just talking about my experience towing. As I said, yes, it will help. Do you want to be able to run 60-65 consistently in 5th gear, not slow down to 55 on grades? Do you want to run consistently at 65-70 mph in 4th gear, not slow down on grades? Do you want to get more than 10 mpg? Do you want to be able to make pulls like US421 up to Boone or I40 up Black Mtn at over 35-40 mph? Do you want to be the guy without the Cummins :) Those are my issues. I live with them. Mine's a good truck, just won't perform as well as I would like but it's a lot cheaper than trading. It's only $500-700 ($250 gears, $100 install kit, $250 labor) for 2wd, regear and let us know what you think.

pulling to uwharrie does not bother me or truck but i go to tellico once a year saluda hill on 26 kills my truck 25 mph up it max.i hate being the slow one.really want cummins but finding a good used one without 100,000 miles is the thing.
thank you,
bryan

My 77 Chevy rollback has a 454 and SM465 4-speed manual trans (it does not have overdrive). It works great with 4.10 gears, other than the fuel consumption when I ran more than 65mph loaded. :) This is with approx 31.5-inch tires (235/85/16).

A guy in my 4x club had a 200X Chevy 1500 5.3L with 4.10 gears and shorter tires, and loved it.

I think with your overdrive auto trans, 4.10s would be great. You could keep it in 3rd (1:1) while towing heavy, and use OD when empty to keep down the revs.

4.10's would be fine and help alot. i've got a fair amount of experience with 94-01 gas rams, and they are much happier with 3.92's/4.10's with stockish tires.

I agree 100%, those trucks should have come with 4.10's stock (only the 1500 offroad did with the gas engine)
There are alot of things you can do to wake up that 360 to tow better. I tow with a 360 powered Ram and it does pretty good, not a deisel but for what it is I am very happy. 4.10 gears, Headers, 1.6 rr an M1 intake and a freeflowing intake will make a world of difference, there are lots of other things you can do also but I would start there.
