Registering a Military Trailer in NC

Has anyone had to do this. I picked up a M1101 Cargo Trailer for a friend in our club and he has a copy of the bill of sale from the Government Liquidation company and a Bill of Sale from the individual that bought the trailer at acution. However he has gone twice to the DMV and not been able to get a tag. They keep trying to use the MFG Serial as a VIN number. The trailer does not have a VIN number on it at all. I figured that the DMV would have to issue a VIN number since it has never had one.
Has anybody else had experience getting this done?
Thanks

Could you stamp your own VIN on the tongue & axle(s) like home-made trailers have?
I'm not sure how legal that is since it isn't a home-made trailer, but it may be an option.

edit - just saw this in the garage, looks like home-made is the way to go! If its at your house, I can bring a stamp kit over to do the stamping before your friend gets it.

SHP told me that Military trailers cannot be stamped/titled/registered as homebuilt. They have to have "bonded" titles. "...home built would not cut as one of us would have to sign off on it, and it definitely is not home made...,troopers in this area wont sign off on them any more....like I told (the P.O.) bonding is the only legal way...

as I said, bond will be no higher that $150 then title, tag, fees less than $250 total just off the top of my head, may be even less. ...is what allows us (DMV) to legally issue you a title. covers if someone tries to claim the trailer...a protection measure... (The P.O.) just needs to give you a bill of sale and a notarized statement of how he got the trailer without a title. No major hurdles to jump takes usually less than a week depending on who you get the bond from.... have to have 2 estimates of value (on dealer letterhead, can be car dealer or trailer dealer) then bond is for 1 and 1/2 times highest estimate,,,ie $100 est and $200 est bond would be $300 ( actual cost is about $150 for anything up to $4k)."

BEFORE YOU DO ANY UPGRADES OR REPAIRS TO THE TRAILER...

"...just go ahead and get two estimates before you do anymore...keeps the value lower....any trailer dealer or car dealer can help, on their letterhead,.. can give you one then any trailer dealer since you are in E city there are several....my guess is highest est will be less than 300 making bond in area of of 450 your cash would be 150 for bond......"

Mine has this decal on it.

By the off chance. Is this information still up to date? Looking at purchasing one in Tennessee that doesn’t have a title.

Yes. Call your local DMV license and theft office, they can walk you through the process. www.thebondexchange.com in Charlotte can do the bond basically same day. Bond cost will be $100, I think that covers $5k value.

You can also just pull it without a tag, the chances of ever getting pulled are pretty slim, and the ticket would likely be less than the title. Do your own research on this option if you want though, don't take my opinion.

I purchased an M100 from an owner in TN. Never been titled. Tag office only required a bill of sale. I paid for multi year tag and DMV puts 4 month hold on title before issuing. Super easy process.

I did the homebuilt route with mine years ago. The DMV office will issue a VIN which has to be stamped in two different places - axle and frame typically, then a DMV or SHP officer needs to inspect that these are done and signs the paperwork from the DMV that had the VIN on it. Then you get to pay Uncle Dale every year.

I have a military trailer that’s titled as homemade. Somehow I argued with everyone at the DMV decades ago telling them it was homemade. Piece by price I assembled it.
