If you've been to any of the ECORS races, you'll know that Linda Towery works just as hard as Rob and Ron to keep things running smoothly. She takes tickets, sells merchandise and helps the guys make sure things are where they need to be.
She's asked me to post up that she's doing Relay For Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Any donation helps but they are also taking items for a raffle (items or gift cards\certificates), selling Relay For Life "feet" for $1 each and luminaries that will be displayed at the event for $10.
Here's her story:
"My brother was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 24, 2 weeks before Kylie's first birthday, Sept 9, 2004. He had surgery Oct 9, 2004. He was told he had Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer for an adult to get. It is usually seen in children. It is a soft tissue cancer. When found in adults the outlook is usually not good. If one cell is not removed it is VERY bad. It ended up spreading to lymph nodes, pancreas, and 1 lung. He went through numerous cycles of radiation and chemo. In November 2006 he got extremely sick and was put in the hospital on a respirator not knowing if he would be able to breathe on his own again. We had to make the decision on Lane's 6th birthday to unhook the machine. Luckily, he was able to breathe and remained in the hospital until his own birthday Dec 5th! He was told then that chemo was done and there was nothing more they could do. The chemo alone would kill him... SO, he was sent home under Hospice Care! He had good days and bad days. They contacted Cancer Treatment Center of America and he went to Oklahoma for 2 weeks for testing, etc., and they told him the same thing... nothing more could be done. On January 9 2007 he lost his battle. The absolute hardest thing I have EVER had to deal with. It was in his face. He had been treated as having a sinus infection for almost a month. Then, it became obvious that it was something else. He had a large knot come up behind his eye and down towards his mouth. They did a biopsy through his nose and knew right away it was cancer."
