Relocating the Battery Inside a SUV

I drive a 91 montero and looking at swapping in a different engine. In doing this to free up some more room in the engine bay I was thinking of relocating the battery on the center hump in the back seat. I was thinking of putting it into a vented sealed battery box and run heavy gauge wires to the engine bay to a terminal block. What kind of problems am I looking at with this set up. I was told to be concern about gas emissions and over heating issues. Could I install a small computer fan and a vent to solve this problem? Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions are welcome. thanks.

The napa guy told me red tops do not gas off, I asked him 3 times if he was sure. Could be an answer if someone else can confirm.

Buy an SLA battery, then no worries.

Just mount it in the trunk compartment? Why have it in the way where the seat is... Just run the wires from the battery through the inside of the cab, dunno if you wheel the Montero or not but I prefer it not being able to ever get caught up/cut up/smashed up running it underneath the vehicle. Take it through the firewall, down to the starter, to the fuseblock, etc. Make sure to run good engine grounds as well, from the block to a sanded off bare metal part of the engine bay. A sealed battery would be best, as drkelly said. No worries about leaking/spilling anything.

If its inside the cab, definitely a sealed battery with a good hold down system!

i might just look into turning the battery sideways in the engine bay. that might be the safer route. thanks yall.

I'd bet $$$ you can fit a standard optima in the engine bay, even with an engine swap. Get the new motor in there, THEN look at your room and see if its possible to keep it under the hood. If you need more room, get an Odyssey battery.

I wouldn't put it in the vehicle.

+1 on the Odyssey battery. Super lightweight, super compact, and powerful.
